Where, oh where, has my recycling bin gone?

I recently installed the FlyKiteOSX theme onto my laptop, which by the way LOOKS AWESOME. I love it, it's like having the best of both worlds, the fuctionality of a PC with the OS aethestics of a Mac

Anyways, so after I installed the theme, my Recycle Bin disappeared from my desktop. Is there a way I can get it back onto the desktop, without installing anymore third party software (like TweakUI)?

 

Maybe a Reformat maybe but that is all i know on how to get it back. There might be something in settings, ill look.

SYMPTOMS
The Recycle Bin does not appear on the Desktop. Therefore, you cannot restore a file that was deleted.

CAUSE
This issue may occur if any of the following conditions is true:
• A third-party program was used to hide the Recycle Bin.
• The TweakUI program was used to hide the Recycle Bin.
• The registry information for the Recycle Bin was deleted.
• A Group Policy was used to hide the Recycle Bin.

Note Windows XP Home Edition does not support Group Policy.

Method 1: Use the Program That Removed the Recycle Bin to Restore the Recycle Bin
If you used the TweakUI program to hide the Recycle Bin, follow these steps to restore the Recycle Bin to the desktop: WARNING : If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. 1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel
4. In the right pane, right-click the following registry DWORD value, and then click Modify:
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
5. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK. (The TweakUI utility sets this value to 1 to hide the Recycle Bin icon.)
6. Quit Registry Editor.

The Recycle Bin icon reappears on the Desktop.

Method 2: Edit the Registry to Restore the Recycle Bin
Note This procedure will not work if the system administrator used a Group Policy to hide the Recycle Bin (or "All Icons") on the Desktop.

To edit the registry to make the Recycle Bin icon reappear on the desktop: 1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
4. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 3, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, and then press ENTER.
6. Click the new {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} key that you created in step 5.
7. In the right pane, double-click the (Default) entry.
8. In the Edit String dialog box, type Recycle Bin in the Value data box, and then click OK.
9. Quit Registry Editor.

The Recycle Bin icon reappears on the Windows desktop.

Method 3: Use the Group Policy Object Editor to Restore the Recycle Bin
If the system administrator used Group Policy to hide the Recycle Bin or "All Icons" on the Desktop, you may have to contact the system administrator to restore the Recycle Bin icon.

Note The following procedures will only work on Windows XP Professional.

The system administrator can either use the Group Policy Object Editor (GPEDIT.msc) or manually remove the registry information (that was created through the Group Policy Object Editor) for the Recycle Bin to restore the Recycle Bin icon to the Desktop. • To use the Group Policy Object Editor to restore the Recycle Bin: 1. Click Start, click Run, type GPEDIT.MSC in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Under User Configuration, click Administrative Templates, and then double-click Desktop.
3. Double-click Remove Recycle Bin icon from the desktop.
4. Click the Setting tab, click Not Configured, and then click OK.

• To use Registry Editor to restore the Recycle Bin: 1. Click Start, and then click Run .
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\NonEnum
4. Click the registry key that you located in step 3, and then in the right pane, click the following registry DWORD value:
{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

The Recycle Bin icon reappears on the Desktop.

WORKAROUND
If you cannot restore the Recycle Bin by using the resolutions that are listed in this article, work around this issue by creating a shortcut to the Recycle Bin: 1. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, and then click to clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when the warning message appears.
4. Click Folders on the toolbar.
5. In the left pane, under Folders, locate the Recycle Bin folder, and then drag the Recycle Bin folder to the desktop.
6. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
7. Click the View tab, and then click to select the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click OK.
Note This procedure will not re-create the original icon, but this will restore most of the features of the Recycle Bin, including the following: • Delete a file by dragging it to the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop.
• Retrieve a file that you deleted by double-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, right-clicking the file that you want to retrieve, and then clicking Restore.
• Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
When you use these step to work around the problem, you cannot right-click the Recycle Bin shortcut to access the Recycle Bin Properties. To set properties for the Recycle Bin, follow these steps: 1. Double-click the Recycle Bin shortcut on the Desktop. The Recycle Bin folder opens.
2. In the upper left corner of the Recycle Bin folder, right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and then click Properties.

I'm not sure why would you want to have Rec.Bin on the desktop , but regardless, it should still be in the Win Explorer even if some program hides it from Dsktp.

 

i agree. i have no icons on my desktop. if you're running a theme/skin, and you know that's why the bin is gone, i would say look at the config for the theme/skin and see if there's a way to leave it on the desktop. many themes/skins take over your desktop and you are at it's mercy.

like jaydee says, you can always browse to it in explorer.

hint for those who use the quicklaunch toolbar: you can drag the recycle bin to the quicklaunch bar and it will function just like on the desktop. it will get "full" where there are items awaiting deletion and show "empty" when it's empty.

 

Hey, inkyquills, the flyakite has taken away your recycle bin...
looks like you did not install it with 'RK launcher' option ticked in...the bin is in it's dock... go to flyakite settings(under programs-->flyakite) and see if you can include it now...or the best way to go is to uninstall and reinstall the program...hardly takes a few minutes...don't forget to tick in your options this time...while at it, you may also want to tick in 'winroll'...another nice touch...
another way is to install rklauncher seperately...it's a small free download...
