My sentiments exactly. Can't wait to slipstream it into my Vista SP1 USB key, and do some spring cleaning on my laptop.

I believe it's slated for release some time during Q2 of this year. Expect maybe May or June.

Look at the prices of vista?

And ? not installing sp2 because you may one day install win7? how about installing sp2 and then install win7 when you have it?

    everything else is just wierd.

mmm.. say if these two things come, say almost together..and i would want W7..then does it make any sense to install SP2 n then buy W7 n then install/upgrade VISTA..?

well, as we all know that won't happen, the question is mood :) sp2 will be in 1, 2 months. win7 at earliest in midsummer, most likely towards the end of the year (christmas time, when everyone buys new systems).

even if it's just one month difference, it makes sense to install sp2. the added security and performance is worth it, even just for one month (even just for one day, actually. it's not like you lose anything :)).

I liked Win 7 demo. It has some cool features and I must say I will be getting rid of UAC. I would love to upgrade my PC to Win 7 rather than Vista.

I haven't heard much about Vista SP2. At least nothing that makes me want to rush out and download it as soon as it hits. Maybe Windows Search 4.0, but then I got it as a seperate download a while back.

it's a service pack; a collection of windows updates and fixes and such. you should just install it like anything else. when it comes, install it. nothing special anywhere.

to the guy above quoting he won't want to use uac. your thinking is wrong. better learn how good it is.

Which was my point. SP2 looks to be a yawn, which is out of sync with past SPs.

Service packs have almost always had something special. Think back to SP1:

    • They removed "Search" from the start menu
    • They improved the file copy time estimates
    • They changed the algorithm for file copies over the network
    • You can now select drives in defrag

Think back to XP SP2. They added:

    • Data Exection Prevention
    • Windows Firewall
    • Windows Security Center
    • Bluetooth Support

That's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Vista SP2 looks to be a minor upgrade at best.

Now for Server 2008, SP2 looks like interesting though.............

I wish they have removed UAC and unnecessary bootup files.

It would be nice if Service Pack 2 allows the multicore enhancements that Windows 7 has to enhance battery life.

it wouldn't if people bought vista.. now all the new stuff goes to win7..

    Changes on SP2

there is stuff in sp2. I like the wlan-after-standby-fix. this is currently very annoying :)

yep, remove the biggest security advance and advantage vista has because some users are too dump to learn how good and effective it is.

and unnecessary bootup files, most are external drivers, not part of vista, that make booting slow. by removing card readers and such from my pc, i got vista down from 2.5min to <30sec. it's not microsoft's fault if the drivers suck.

It would be nice to get all the enhancements of win7 bare the terrible taskbar and the uac "fixes". but people hated vista and made it a non-seller. so we now have to pay for a new os that could've been a simple sp2, else..

    (yes, i'm bitter :))

Difficult if the card readers etc. are built into a laptop.
Any USB periphals - definitely booting wthout is better, but, if you boot with the periphals all the time, it'll be faster than without...

disable in the bios. i can do that in mine.

edit: that's just for testing purposes. then you can go to your vendors and cry around how their drivers suck :)

    I know. :)

About the BIOS Dave - well, some laptops have a, what people call "crippled" BIOS - and many devices cannot be deactivated - things like card readers.

But I suppose often new drivers should solve the problem too - in a way - at least they should...

it depends. sometimes hw needs firmware updates, too, as they have initialisation problems, or so. it can be difficult.

anyone want a free crappy card reader? mine lies around in the room waiting for a job :)
