I'm getting a new laptop soon and I'm trying to generate a list of software to have prepared on a CD when I get it. What do you all usually install on a new computer?

ALSO! What's your preferred method of delivery for all of your programs onto a new install... Flash drive? DVD?

Feel free to critique my list.

Edit: Also, this is XP professional

Here's my brief list so far:

    -Office
    -Firefox
    -Winrar
    -Latest video drivers
    -Winamp
    -Video Codecs, usually the CCCP
    -Steam
    -iTunes
    -Pidgin
-Stats4U, a little free stats package that I use all the time
    -Symantec
    -SpySweeper
-Home directory Service (Program that allows me to access corporate network)
    -Oracle Calendar
    -Remedy
    -uTorrent
    -Flash player
    -Adobe reader
    -Java
    -Skype
    -Bloated Webcam Software (ew.)

Foxit - for viewing pdf files.
Irfanview - for simple image editing.
    Opera - for W2K, no IE7. :(
    RMClock - for undervolting.

After a clean install install I immediately install .......

    Necessary Drivers

    Windows Updates

    Avast AntiVirus

    Office 2007
More Windows Updates (mostly new Office updates)

    Streets & Trips 2007

All extra Browsers I want ...FireFox, Opera, etc:
Config and Add Adobe Flash to Browsers

Media Players .... Winamp, Itunes, RealPlayer, VLC, Divx Player/Codecs, etc:

    Trillian Messenger

    POPPeeper and/or Windows Mail Live

    StatBar

    Windows Washer & CCleaner

    Faststone Image Viewer

    Azureus & Limewire

    Nero 7 & Roxio

    Adobe PhotoShop, Gimp, & Paint

    Daemon Tools

Let me stop now cause I can probably go on forever, being that I like to install everything at once instead of install as I need.

Hope you use something like True Image to speed things up. Damn, installing Windows, the updates, and all those programs would take me forever.

What do you think of The Gimp? It comes bundled with a couple of Linux distros I've tried, but I haven't really used it. Seems like the learning curve is too steep for a dummy like myself. You must be happy with the results the app gives you; how long did it take for you to get the hang of it?

I might start doing that or at least look more into it. It does takes hours to get EVERYTHING I'll need on a Fresh Install. BTW, I only list like half the stuff :D

Yea I like Gimp a lot and only took me a couple of days to get the hang of it. But I'm also a Photoshop user, so I had the advantage of recognizing some gimp icons right away. IMO it's all about know what the Icons do. Just Google each task you plan to do and you'll learn quickly or do a search in gimp's help files.

    To those mentioned I'll add:
Winamp (and any other media players you like)
A PDF reader (Adobe Reader or FoxIt)
Paint.NET (less powerful than GIMP, but easier to use)
Some sort of notepad replacement (I'm using EditPad Lite right now; it's fine; there are plenty of others too)
A "dock" or app launcher (I'm using ObjectDock, but there are others)
Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express (if you're into that stuff)
PuTTY (if you have use for an rsh/ssh/telnet client)
cygwin (Unix-ish environment; comes with plenty of nice little utilities)
Microsoft TweakUI PowerToy (on XP; may work on Vista too... not sure)

    I'll add:

FlashGet - download embedded Flash files and torrents.
    Google Earth
    GreatNews - RSS feed reader
    Picassa
    SpeedFan
SureSync - without a doubt the BEST synch tool available. It's not free but it's the best $60 I ever spent. It will handle ANY sort of sync scenario you need including multiple masters (the acid test of ANY sync app).

Instead of installing, my first thoughts go to uninstalling things. In windows I
-kill every form of autorun for removable media
-disable any form of automatic update
-disable the eyecandy effects (I don't give a damn, and they suck resources)
-uninstall all sorts of bloatware but even potentially funcional software like Microsoft Works, Roxio's CD stuff, McAffe AV.
-keep that WMP monster away from me, by associating media files with Media Player Classic (yep, I install that) with Real Alternative and Quicktime alternative.

    And then I install
-drivers for the external devices, if any
    -a zip archiving software (7zip)
-a pdf viewer (Adobe Reader) and virtual printer (cutePDF)
    - djvu viewer
    -Mathematica reader
    -a light antivirus (Antivir)
-a Unix style environment (Un*x Tools, MinGW)
    -my compilers
-a light text editor with syntax highlighting
-Open Office (I dumped MS Office even if for certain things it was better)

Firefox has a "recently closed tab" link in the bookmarks, which essentially does that same thing, although not necessarily with the same "undo" ease.

Hey Bigspin why don't you use Openoffice? You should give it a try man it's great. Much better than MS office.

    1. Opera. Before anything else, even drivers.
    2. Drivers to get everything working properly.
    3. Sid Meier's Civilization III: Conquests. Best game ever.
    4. Microsoft Office.

Everything else comes gradually. PDF viewer - this time I decided to try Foxit Reader instead of Adobe, RightMark CPU Clock Utility, Java, various other programs I have.

My preferred method of delivery is the CDs the software came with, or The Internet for free stuff from the Web. For data, I prefer to just use a flash drive.

A very nice free backup program; DiscWizard by Seagate aka Acronis TrueImage.
Harddrive manufacturer Seagate has made a deal with Acronis to offer their program for free under the name of Discwizard.

Thx to Macpod for the info.
