On my Dell, I use AVG Free Edition. It works well, I suppose, although I rarely get viruses anyways. Not sure how much longer it will be free, though, since Intel just bought Grisoft (makers of AVG).

For my AVERATEC, I run Linux. Best antivirus protection money can't buy. ;)

I am using Norton 2005 on one, and Pc-cillin 2005 on the other.

I like the fact that PC-cillin uses less resources, but I am still not too sure about it, especially its built in firewall. I have been using it for over 4 months now and no problems. But I just cannot be sure it will not fail me later.

I have been a norton user ever since NAV 5 (i think, before the started the 2xxx naming scheme), and although I cannot say I am crazy about it, especially its eating up tooooo much resources, it has never failed me.

I absolutely hate McAfee. My university had it installed (one of those corp. editions?) on some PCs in the office I worked in and that thing just caught nothing!

Of the free AV's AVG is a favorite of mine. I still use it on some of my older PCs, that I rarely use but like to keep protected

I have been using Sophos Antivirus (get it through my University) after seeing how much norton is a system hog. It does a bit better.

I never really liked Norton when it was on my desktop, and it was responsible for some pretty long startup times, and two times a virus got through I ended up having to reformat to get rid of (granted this was back when I was P2Ping on Kazaa).

Mcafee lost my money when the version I bought less than a year prior started suddenly causing my machine to take upwards of 5 minutes to get to the welcome screen. I had just renewed my service, and tech support told me that the version I was running was no longer covered by mcafee, and that I would need to pay the full price of the program to upgrade. After uninstalling, there are still traces of the program on my machine I can't seem to find or disable (it still keeps trying to update, for instance).

Currently I've been using the ZoneAlarm Firewall/AV, and I haven't had any problems yet. Autoupdate hogs my internet connection for a minute after startup, but I rarely notice it. The only real complaint I have is that the FW could be a bit more user friendly with program control, it's either on autopilot, or it wants direction on every instance of every program. I'd just like to see an option a it more "middle of the road".

I've heard good things about the Windows AV beta, anyone tried it yet?

I don't use one, I find they slow system performance too much. I am just very careful, I don't open anything suspect and don't visit dodgy websites. My router also has inbuilt firewall protection. I do however run Ad-Aware and Spybot to take care of spyware problems. So far I have been lucky and not contracted any viruses on my system.

Yes, I am using it on my laptop and desktop. It's ok. AdAware does a much better job of picking up spyware, but Microsoft does a decent job of blocking stuff. It won't pick up tracking cookies in a scan, or little stuff like that. It mainly finds little programs/dialers, stuff like that.

Doesn't seem to really slow down the computer either.

    Hey - it's free!! Try it! :D

i noticed that a lot of people use different types of antivirus. is norton bad or is it just because it uses a lot of resources?

I've used Norton for the longest time, but sometimes I noticed a lag in performance (which I assumed was Norton), so I recently switched over to PC-Cillin and it seems to be working fine.

But then again, I've never really had any problems with viruses anyway, so who knows if it's working or not.

i have used avast since 2000 so ive been useing it going on 6 years and viruses havent been a problem and the boot time scan is great ive seen viruses that programs like norton and mcafee couldnt remove because they were active processes and with avast's boot time scan it can remove them before windows boots up and they become active processes so i would tell anyone to give it a try because ive tried many virus programs and so far avast is the one i like best

the newer versions of nortons suck. it's awful, they don't stop asking you unimportant things. again and again. thank god there are much better scanners, some you can get even for free.

i've my virusscan coupled with my firewall (both made by mcafee). for usual mcafee gives you a message, if it finds a virus. since over an year i haven't got such a message. and my machine works perfect. of course avast is an alternative, but i prefer mcafee. for sure it's better than norton ... (avast & mcafee).
a very genius feature of mcafee is the trojan and script scan. they are very useful and so you don't need another program like Ad-Aware.

I don't like Norton because it hogs system resources and is hard to remove from your computer. I use AVG free, Zone Alarm and Adaware.

Norton does have a reputation for being among the best in virus protection, however. We got a virus at work that AVG wouldn't remove, and were able to get rid of it by installing a copy of Norton we had laying around.

I was using this until a couple wks ago when my free sub from work ran out... Darn fine AV and uses very little system resources.
now running AVG free. uses 3+ x as much resources as Nod32, and 4 processes instead of 2. oh well.

But my biggest anti-virus/anti-spyware is my BRAIN. I haven't run an anti-spyware program in many months. For the heck of it, I did scans last week and all I were found 4 minorly questionable cookies.
I can tell what is good and what is bad, and know at any given moment what is running on my machine. Using some common sense on the internet and knowing your computer is more powerful than any software.

SACE... got it from work and it's great. Only downlside is that a full scan takes 12 minutes on my laptop. But that's probably due to "deep" scanning.

This week I've been testing Kaspersky Personal Pro v5 and I'm really liking it. Fairly light-weight, does what I need, no more no less. Until now I was using Norton AV 2005, and yes it definitely is a resource hog, especially on older/slower computers.

My old Dual P3 600MHz 512MB system is noticeably more responsive with Kaspersky running full system scans and running in the background than it was with Norton 2005 :D

I use norton antivirus, but only because its so easy, and catches more things than the rest. But that doesn't excuse the heafty processor and memory usage.
Anybody got a suggestion that uses just 1 process and less than 30megs of memory?
