DVD RW cost more and may not last as long. Verbatim is about the best commonly available brand.

Yes, I would move it to a DVD±R disc later, as they, in my experiences, tend to last longer.

On average, the by the time the crappiest dvd-r disk starts to corrupt itself, you'll have already upgraded to a much better storage method. DVD-r will be a thing of the past like "zip drives". Who still use that?

    Use DVD RW it's better.

DVD R discs can't be erased and reused, DVD RW can be erased and reused

You can buy a pack of 100 DVD-R for less than $15. You can write multisession disk to make incremental backups. It's much more cheaper than using DVD-RW disk. Also, DVD-RW is slow. DVD-R goes up to 24-28x speed whiel DVD-RW only goes up to 12x.

Just curious.... doesn't Sony speify that it hs to be an "R" disc? I know I had to use two single layer discs, rather than one double layer disc... it crashed on the double layer - twice - and yes, I have a double laer drive in my SZ, ad yes the Vaio backup software should have supported it in theory, and yes it does worked, I burnt a dual layer DVD with Nero at a later date.
