Sometimes when I open movies in WMP, it lags before it starts playing. I have Vista codec package installed, but some say CCCP is better. Which one is faster, and has better playback quality?? I can take little lag if it improves the visual appeal and quality of the video..

K-Lite Codec Pack. Use Media Player Classic. I like GOMPlayer but it always incorrectly displays srt subtitles.

Mega Codec Pack has integrated codec for Real Media ;), so you don't need Real Media Alternative (I won't mention bloated Real One).

K-Lite Codec Pack comes in 4 versions: Basic, Standard, Full, and Mega.

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Mega is basically Full + Real Alternative.

Personally I just use Standard and installed Real Alternative separately. For most people, the Standard is enough to watch pretty much everything. Full is good for people who want to encode their own videos.

Torrents are not illegal or bad, as long as its a legal file. I am pretty sure a codec pack would be a free file and just using a torrent file for distribution.

CCCP for sure, it's the fastest and the most efficient. If you're looking to play high def stuff, either get Mplayer or buy CoreAVC.

Having too many codec/filter installed is not good. Can lead to conflicts. Best thing to do is uninstall everything. Then install CCCP. Then you can update the FFdshow that comes with CCCP to the Latest ones. Then add extra codecs/whatever as you need them, say for encoding. Even then, you can get far with the VFW part of ffdshow.

Actually I'm not. But CCCP is not a codec pack. It's FFdshow, Haalis media splitter, VSFilter, WMV9VCM, Gabest's MPV (MPEG2) Decoder, CoreWavPack, Gabest's FLV Splitter, Media Player Classic and Zoomplayer in one installer.

These are all applications (especially MPC, FFDshow and Haalis) that you wanna install anyways. But there isn't even ONE codec in there.

Yes it is. It's for the people who think codec packs are good. And if they didn't use codec in the name, it wouldn't be CCCP (for you younger people, wiki it).

Pardon my ignorance, but is it true that some/certain codec packs install unwanted spyware and other files onto your system?

Why on earth would you install both? They contain virtually the same components.

CCCP will play pretty much anything you throw at it.

I went to the site to get the K Lite Codec pack and I saw a bunch of the different types. I just went ahead and downloaded the FULL version, but before I run the .exe, I was wondering what is the difference between the different versions. Will the version I downloaded come with bloatware, spyware, etc.? I'm just extra cautious about this kind of stuff. I really wish I didn't even have to install extra codecs.

    Hi THAANSA3,
Does VLC Player support Windows Vista 64 bit?
I only see the file: vlc-0.9.8a-win32.exe . I am afraid it doesn't support Windows 64 bit.

    Thanks

Of course it does. KM Player is way better than VLC. I've used both. I know. My video files in VLC are so laggy and when I fast forward it is not smooth, it's jerky and takes a few seconds to start playing. Especially the new versions of VLC, seems much more bloated. KM Player is light on resources and plays everything I throw at it.
