What software do you use to backup your pc?
    Ghost?
    Genie?
    Acronis?
    what?

I am looking for software that will backup files directly to DVD and will also create a drive image for complete restore.

Will Acronis put a drive image to DVD? and will it make a boot disk? Sometimes I just want to re-image my hd back to before a problem has occurred.

Yes and yes. I prefer to put the image on my external hard drive. The boot disc sees it on mine. You'd have to take the boot disc out to put the image disc in. I don't know if Arconis will like that. Also the files size of my image was over 2GB which can only be burned in UDF format which Arconis could not see. There are modes that compress the file more, but probably will take more time to restore.

I use Ghost, but the old ghost that comes with 2003, the latest one is technology Symantec bought from another company and I have tried it and in my opinion the latest version of ghost is rubbish.
Use the ghost DOS program and you will have no troubles, I reimage my machines at least 60 times a year and never had one problem on any of my 4 machines.

I don't use any sort of program to back up my PC. I have an external 80GB hard drive - once a week I just hook that up, and transfer all my data - usually about 4 gigabytes. I have a different folder for each week.

Sometimes, I also back up my data to CD-R's or DVD-R's.

    I'm a pretty simple guy! :p

Not really, the other backup programs will copy every system file, hidden files, and boot sectors, a simply copy does not get all files, if you machines get infected with virus's, boot sector, etc. copying your data back will simply keep your machine infected. A true backup program like Ghost and Acronis will simply dump the drive image over everything, thus making a virus infected machine or system program corruption never a worry.

I have seen many people's strait copy backup method come crashing down in flames when a system corruption or virus infects their system.

A simply solution for only simple fixes.

Added to the fact that I can restore my machine faster than you will ever be able to copy any of your files back.

I do it manually, but I don't backup my whole machine. I only backup my dissertation. I should backup my Outlook content too but I am too lazy.
    I use CDs

Depending what you want to do and what you want to back up. The contents of my machine changes fast enough so that sometimes a one-week-old image would be useless. And doing it more often that that is a waste of time to me.

I think that the preferred way is to install the set of programs you want to use, use something like Ghost to back it up (so that you can restore just the system, if something bad happens), and then back up your documents and media manually at regular intervals.

I used to just backup an image to an external harddrive. Now I just backup my data. If the system crashes, its no use restoring the backup cause the problem is probably already there.

Retrospect to an external HD. The software came with the Maxor HD and I have it set to back up just my docs @ 9pm everynight. Does the backup in about 2 minutes. Couldn't get much easier!
