hi, i have a new laptop. my grandma has roadrunner, and said that i can use her internet. it says i need a wep password. she and everyone else doesn't know it. she said i can do whatever i want to get to it, as long as i dont do any thing with her computer or router. so is there any software that lets me just go around her password? i went to this site called "sorce forge" and typed in WEP, but when i download te stuff, its random notepad files... HELP!

If you know her router admin password, connect directly via cable to the router, open the admin configuration through IE, and see if the WEP password is in plain text in the configuration. I know my Linksys access point's is.

The site is called "SourceForge", and it's a repository for all kinds of program source code. What you downloaded sounds like the source to some kind of WEP hacking program, more than likely. Nothing you'd need.

You just need to figure out who set up your grandma's network, and what the WEP passcode is. It'll be a string of either 10 or 26 hex characters, looking something like something like "EF45D1EF56", if you see a bunch of random stuff written down like that on a sticky note or something.

Edit: Sounds like you have no clue about the network, which isn't exactly the best situation. It's embedded in a wall in the house? Can you physically access it at all (ie, do you know where the actual box is)? Do you know where it comes out? Sounds like you need a professional there, someone who's dealt with these issues before, and will fix it right.

she had it put in the wall. i dont know why. i do know what a wep key looks like, but there is nothing. thats why i was looking to find a wep hacking or bypass program. no i don't have access to the router, unless i cut open the wall, which i am not alowed to do. does any one know how to use the stuff of sourceforge?

Nope. And even if I did, I wouldn't post it here. Just go and ask your neighbor if you can use his internet. Nobody walls up a router. That's just idiotic.

Actually, that's what I did at my Mom's house when I visited. Her computer dialed up, then shared it out via Internet Connection Sharing to the wireless access point. Worked pretty good, but slooowww.

Have you grandma contact RoadRunner - most likely the WEP password was configured during the install process. They should be more than happy to walk her/you through the process.

Great advice. Just call Roadrunner since they're the ones who set up the router. I was going to suggest to reset the box but since it's embedded... A wireless router in the wall? Kinda funny. I wonder if there was an external antenna for broadcast.

Wireless through dial-up? Can be done but it'll be super slow.
