    Hey there!

I am in the process of customizing my new notebook for school. I have just about everything figured out. But I cant seem to find a specific program I want to fit my needs.

I have been looking for a software program that can take live or recorded voice/speech, and convert it to text/notes. Ideally I would like it to be compatable with Vista.

I have found many text to speech programs, but nothing about speech to text.

Did I dream this up? does it exist?

Let me know what you think, if you can recomend a product, that would be awesome!

    Thanks!

Do you think the vista program would work well for a lecture?

My goal is to record live lectures, and have them converted to text notes for future use.

The vista demo made it look very easy, but if its a program that only works for one user's voice, then this wont work for me.

I don't know how well it will work for that... but I don't know if any other programs will be better. I guess just test out different programs and see what works best for you.

I just reviewed the website for this product, it looks like what I'm looking for... Can I ask, does your hubby use this for lecture/meetings? or is this a program that only recognizes the one users voice? I'm planning on using the program to record live lectures from many different people, and have it converted to text.

    What do you think?

I am not sure how well any voice recognition program will work under the parameters that you are specifying.

All of the ones that I have used, you must "train" the program to recognize your speech patterns and inflections. This would not work for a lecture.

IMO, that's LAME! Much easier to use a mouse/short cuts. Or a recorder for lectures...

I am not sure if you can do that. I have used the built in vista one. You have to speak slowly and clearly in a quiet room. I suspect a class room will have a lot of background noise that will confuse the computer. Also, you have to train the computer to recognize your personal voice. There is a built in training program that you must do. My computer will type what I say but ignores my husband even if he talks directly into the microphone. Either it does not respond to him or it keeps asking "what was that?". He has not done the training program to teach it his voice. If you are a student trying to record the professor, I don't think you will get good results. If you are the professor it would work if you used the computer to make handouts in advance. As a student you might be better off just recording a voice and listening to it again.
