I just purchased an Dell Inspiron 1520 with Windows Vista. Here are some basic specs:

    Intel® Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
    3.5 GB RAM (2 x 2 GB Kingston Aftermarket sticks, 3.5 recognized)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
    160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition

Anyways, the default settings on the touchpad are annoying as hell. It's wayyyy too slow, so I upped the speed quite a bit. Problem is, everytime I reboot my laptop, or turn it off and back on, the settings are lost.

Another problem. My Dell Bluetooth notebook mouse. It seems like I have to search for the mouse and install it everytime I boot up the laptop.

Anyone have an idea what the problem may be? I've done a few tweaks to Vista settings, and the only one that I've heard that could potentially mess things up is turning off the User account Control prompting messages. It's just so annoying to have to allow your computer do to many regular tasks.

And now I've also noticed that I lose the connection with my bluetooth mouse even after I go into sleep mode.

    Any ideas?

did you change the mouse config in control panel or the dell utility??
go to control panel and find mouse and then pointer option and change it from there...

I have the same problem with my inspiron 1420.

Everytime i start up the laptop i have to change the touchpad speed to make it faster since default feels way to slow but it doesn't save the settings and the next time i turn it on again i have to repeat the process.

I've tried installing the newest driver as well as the previous version of the ALPS driver on the dell site all to no avail.

I called up dell technical support and they made me share desktop with them and after about 40 minutes of installing, uninstalling and reinstalling of the touchpad driver and rebooting multiple times I was told all i could do was reformat and see if it fixed it then....

Oh and if its any help, the other settings actually save (stuff like touchpad sensitivity) just NOT the touchpad speed one.

When i go into control panel to change the mouse settings, the settings that i change only apply to an external mouse and to change my touchpad settings it once again directs me to the dell touchpad utility.

I have the Dell Inspiron 1520 with exactly the same problem: Setup touchpad speed setting, reboot computer and setting go back to default. I talked with Dell Support 3 or 4 times, after try almost everything they send me another Inspiron 1520... And still have the same problem. If any of you gentlemen have any idea of how to fix this problem please share it with us.

    Thanks :( :(

Someone, anyone, help? I still can't get it to save my settings and I'm about to re-format but since it seems its not just me with the problem I have doubts whether that will have any affect other than waste a few hours..

This won't help with the touch pad, but if you have to re-search for your Dell Bluetooth travel mouse make sure you that in your Bluetooth settings you have the "Passkey Enabled" for the mouse. The passkey is 0000 . I always had to re-search for my mouse until I did this. Wish I could help with the touch pad, but I never use it. As far as getting the bluetooth mouse back after sleep mode you just have to shut-off the bluetooth/wireless switch on the computer and on the mouse, then turn on the bluetooth/wireless switch back on, on the computer, then turn the mouse back on. Sometimes it takes doing this a couple of times to get it to work.

Hope this helps and good luck,

Hope it works for you guys, enjoy.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/51839-3-pointer-speed-resets-reboot

basically go to startup and make sure you can see the full "command" line and look for KHALMNPR.exe and disable it from running at startup.

take care and I love justin chan for showing me the above link

I have a Dell XPS-M1330 laptop pre-installed with Vista, and I have the disappearing touchpad pointer speed setting, too. This started occurring immediately after I installed the SetPoint software for my new Dell Bluetooth Travel Mouse. Previously, I had been using the Vista built-in Bluetooth mouse driver, and the pointer speed setting for the touchpad persisted through a shutdown. But the pointer speeds for the touchpad and the mouse were not independent and the mouse's Fore/Back buttons and the scroll wheel "tilt" buttons to control horizontal scrolling didn't work, so I installed the SetPoint software from the mouse's CD. Now I have to re-set the touchpad's pointer speed at every startup. Has anyone found a solution for this?

The solution is to set the "implentation" mode in the SetPoint software window to "OS implementation" and to use a happy medium between the touchpad and the Bluetooth Mouse speeds. The speed and acceleration and the Enhanced Pointer Precision setting for the touchpad, and the speed settings for the Bluetooth Mouse, will then persist through startups.

Details: In the Control Panel/Mouse/Pointer Options tab, set the pointer speed that is acceptable for both devices. (Selecting "Enhanced Pointer Precision" here will make a fast-n-jerky touchpad pointer move more smoothly and a little slower.) If you then go to Control Panel/Mouse/SetPoint Settings/My Mouse tab/"castle" icon, you will see that the same pointer speed is set for the Bluetooth Mouse. The speed settings are not independent as they woud be with the "SetPoint implementation" mode, but they will persist through startups.

This is a compromise solution, just as it was with no SetPoint software, but at least with the SetPoint software the Fore/Back buttons and the horizontal scrolling "tilt" button work.

I'm not sure I read a true answer about the BT travel mouse issue. I'm having the same problem, but on an Inspiron 1525. I purchased the Dell mouse with the first laptop -- a 1525 for my wife -- and found myself constantly having to reinstall the driver information. Before long, the mouse quit altogether and I couldn't get it to install at all.
Now I have a new 1525, this time for me, and decided to get the travel mouse to work on it. It wouldn't. So after several calls to Dell Support, a tech finally sent me a new BT travel mouse. This one installed but now I'm having the same problems with the laptop sometimes losing driver information on it.
I tried the idea about installing with a passkey; bad idea. There is no way to load a passkey onto the mouse itself and instructions from Dell even tell you not to load a passkey on a mouse. I figured that out when I tried it.
So I still don't have a solid answer on the travel mouse issue. However, I did try the mouse pointer settings idea a few minutes ago -- not sure yet whether it will work or not.
A quick note: In one of my many calls to Dell Support, one tech told me they were having this problem with a ton of folks and he alluded to the fact that they were scrambling to find a patch that would solve the issue. So, I wait ...
