ok I have a Dell E1505 w/ Vista Home premium coming to me in the mail in a few days...

on my desktop w/ XP home i use NOD32 for virus and Sygate for Firewall

and also SYSTEM MECHANIC 7.0 for Computer mantainance

my question is ...is it safe or wise to use those programs that are built for system protection/mantainance w/ WindowsXP ....and use em w/ my VISTA laptop when it arrives????

or could those programs and programs like them..mess up my computer

and is it even necessary to have firewall/anti virus apps for a vista pc right now since its so new

and i really like System mechanic's computer cleaning tools....so im hoping i can still use it for Vista or that they'll come out w/ a Vista compatible version

I am wondering the same thing. I ordered a Compal HEL-80 recently and should be getting it this week. I have a brand new unopened Internet Security Suite. McAfee, I think. I bought it about three months ago and never got around to installing it on my desktop. Should I go get another security app for my Vista-Business Edition or just run the one that was meant for XP?

Perhaps someone that has Vista can help shed some light on this?

    Thanks.

Hey all - I've been running vista home premium for a bit. Let me give some insight...

NOD32 should work OK, in fact I suggest using it as it's a great virus scanner. Even though the new built in vista firewall is a lot better (advanced support for outbound traffic filtering)... I still don't use it. I'm behind a router so, a rather moot point. If you're behind a router definitely disable the firewall for some free resource gains. (unless you like the extra protection). If your thinking about using a third party tool for the firewall, I suggest using the built in vista one - for what it does, it's awesome... and probably lighter on resources then third party firewalls.

Lots of programs out there do not say if they work for vista. Depending on what resources programs are tied into will determine how well, or not so well, they work. If you can't look online to determine if System Mechanic is valid for Vista yet... go ahead and give it a shot - If it won't work vista will let you know (sometimes the hard way).

After some research, System Mechanic 7 is rated to be fully compatible with vista - so you are OK :)
