I have a dell inspiron 1525 with vista home premium 32bit. Probably 1/3 times that i shutoff(not sleep or hibernate) my computer, it turns itself on hours later. Usually the next morning I open up my laptop screen and there is the windows logon screen waiting for me to type in my password. What would be the reason for that? I'm afraid that when I travel with it the battery would die because it doesn't stay turned off.

    Ummm... you're a sleepwalker? ;)
Or you live with other people? Or animals?

I don't know... I've never heard of it turning itself on from the completely off state.

    1) Call the ghost busters
    2) Turn off any Wakeup on LAN or Wake up on demand devices
    3) Block off your IR port if you have one.
    4) Shake the notebook lightly when its turned off, see if it turns back on
    5) Check if your power button is faulty

I think u might have ur Wake On WLAN enabled in ur wireless device properties. I honestly didn't know that this technology worked with wireless devices...I thought it was only for LAN wired devices...but Intel proved me wrong. CLICK HERE

So go to ur 'Device Manager' and make sure WoWLAN is disabled in the wireless card's properties.

If it's not that then I suggest calling the Ghost Busters as Flip said above! :)

and go through the other steps he recommended....

Problem with WoWLAN theory is that it requires computer to be sleeping or hibernating, so it doesn't work on shut down.

My guess is some program is updating at 3AM, and rebooting system after update, and OP may have the system set to 'never shut down' when plugged in.

Also, check your event logs to see what's firing it up - something like that should almost certainly merit a line in one of the event logs.

Do you close the lid before it's turned off? It may just switch to sleep and doesn't turn off at all. Happened to me.

Wow this has been happining to me too.

I have a hp dv2000, and when i press the power button, it fully hibernates.
The next morning, its out of battery. I'm prettty sure it turns on at night b/c i woke up one time and actually saw it just turn on.

Btw, how do you check event logs? I can't find it in vista

I have an HP and it can be turned on from full off with an IR remote (which is one of the coolest things ever). You might wanna check if maybe a TV or other remote might be doing it.

Click the start button, on the search bar type 'eve' without quotes, wait a couple milliseconds, and when you see Event Viewer click on it.

Look up Power-Troubleshooter on the Event Viewer, that will hopefully tell us what is waking it up. As an example:
