I was wondering if you could all help me with a decision, should I keep using Windows Vista Home Premium, or should I upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate? What's the difference between the two? Which ones better? Thanks.

It runs everything. Well, except those really old 16bit programs from win3.1. lol. And if you have a program that won't run right under 7, you can get the windows xp compatibility mode and run all your windows xp programs just like they were in Windows XP, because it's a virtual machine.

Gaming, it's as good as XP. Plus if you have a good video card, you get DX11.

As long as you are already on 64-bit Vista, you can upgrade without reformatting, but it is always safest to back up everything first.

I would say that if you're perfectly content with Vista right now, then why spend the money and effort to upgrade?

On the other hand, if you just want or can justify it by some other means, then I'd say go Win7 all the way.

Most of my games are equal to XP or better performance wise. I couldn't say that about Vista.

If you have both operating systems available, I would suggest upgrading to Windows 7. If, however, you would have to go out and buy a copy of Win7, I would skip it - there are improvements in Win7 over Vista, but not enough to warrant spending over $100. Vista's a fine OS.

Yes and Windows 7 SP1 might be coming out this fall which will probably improve compatibility with programs and work out kinks even more. Although, contrary to most other Windows OS' other than the very first Windows 7 beta maybe, Windows 7 hasn't actually been very bad with bugs, i haven't gotten to the point where something totally won't work on it. I installed it on my ThinkPad T43 and everything is fully functional and fast as well, runs like a quad core :p, the lowest of the X series ATI X300 even runs Aero perfectly fine.

I'd say upgrade to 7. I strongly dislike vista but have recently used 7 and found it to be very nice. Just my two cents.

You can only run xp virtual if you have the ultimate or professional version and if your processor supports it. You can run it in compatibility mode regardless of the version/processor.

You should def switch to win 7. Overall, it is much less taxing on your system and should help your PC run a little faster.

windows 7 seems much more stable than windows vista, so if you have the opportunity to upgrade go for it.
If you're a student you can get it for $30 (Indiana University -_- ) or for free at another Univ

Probably no point in saying this, but - If you think that 7 is as much of an improvement over Vista to warrant paying for an edition of it, then by all means, go ahead. If you feel that it isn't, stay with Vista. Vista is a great OS, much of the problems of Vista have long since been worked out, and I still use it on both my machines fairly regularly.

Personally, I'd suggest at this point that you get Windows 7 Home Premium. Ultimate has features that you are most likely never going to use, and Business comes under the same sort of category as Ultimate. And Enterprise is unavailable to the general public anyway. If it is any help to you OP, some of the reasons I prefer 7 is for it's nicer UI, GUI, and the general efficiency of it. On a clean install it practically flies, providing your hardware is good.

IMO it all depends what you're paying for it. If it warrants paying retail price for an upgrade, then I personally wouldn't buy it. If you can get it for cheap(through MSDNAA or some other form) or as a free upgrade, then by all means go for it.

Windows 7 is effectively only an optimized Vista at its core.

If you have Vista and no specific problems - stick with it.

There is no point in spending money on Win7 if you have Vista.

However, if you were to buy a new computer, get Windows 7.
