I'm quite confused about the differences between Vista home premium and Vista Business edition. Can anyone clarify since dell gives a choice of either one for us to choose for free if you buy a new laptop. Both can be used at home, right? Thanks :D

Home Basic does not include Aero feature and maybe some other feat:
Home Primium does include so does business.

Most thing about the differ besides aero is vague. I think they also take out the DVD maker from basic.

And of course Business should offer better networking.

Ultimate being so expensive should offer office 2007 with it. But thats highly unlikely.

Its more or less like the current XP versions today. XP Home is the basic OS, nothing fancy added. XP Pro offers better means to connect to networks, and XP MCE is Home with added features. This will be mostly the same concept in Vista, the included features will just be upgraded versions.

Vista Home Premium is similar to XP MCE. It has the aero interface, Media Center app, and is the version most home users should choose.

Vista Business is similar to XP Pro. It has the aero interface also, does NOT have Media Center, but adds the ability to join a domain if you need that. There are also some additional group policy settings (I think) that can be accessed with business but the usefulness of that at home is basically none. Also, like XP Pro, you can use Business edition on a system with two physical processor sockets (ie. a high-end workstation) -- again, no real use to home users, especially for a notebook.

Really unless you need to join a domain you should go with Home Premium. Home Basic lacks the aero interface and has several other small limitations and should be avoided altogether.

    Hope this helps.

Home Premium is probably best suited for anyone but business users and basic computer users. Home Basic won't have Aero, so that's a disadvantage.

OR....you can get Vista Ultimate, but I don't think its necessary.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=87858 Should have been stickied.. *grumble*

They're being very sly with their pricing scheme: Home Basic is about the same price as Xp Home, but it is pretty crippled; almost everyone will upgrade to the more expensive Home Premium. Also, the distinction between Premium and Business is more evident than MCE vs Pro; you can't get the features of both without going all the way up to ultimate...

M$, I hate you.. so much...

Wonders why you can't upgrade from Enterprise?

Even though the upgrade would only be Media Center & Ulimate extras.

Enterprise is not even necessary when you think about it.

You would be just plain dumb to purchase Home basic when you already have XP pro or Media.

Enterprise is only sold via volume license to large companies -- who have no need for Media Center and likely don't want their employees installing it. Plus, then Microsoft would have to make a volume license edition of Ultimate and make it compatible with their new volume license activation tools, etc. And it IS needed though it really doesn't need to be listed as a separate version... just calling it Business Volume License Edition would have worked too.

    Thanks for the explaination.

Looking into it more, it seems that the business edition is really for personal or small businesses. And the Enterprise is for Large companies. Thus the word Enterprise.

I wonder will Ultimate will be OEM? If I purchase a new notebook late next year I want all of vista.

My laptop is coming with MCE with an upgrade to Home Premium. If Microsoft offers a dicounted price to go from Premium to Ultimate I might do it. I can't see spending $259 for the upgrade let alone $399 for the full retail package, that's nuts.

Actually both of the "N" versions lack Windows Media Player, as required by the EU. They aren't available elsewhere and only exist for antirust reasons. Threre really isn't any reason to aquire either of these versions (Home Basic N or Business N).

You can use the Vista "anytime upgrade" feature to updgrade Home Premium to Ultimate for a lower charge, though I recommend using Home Premium for awhile before deciding that you "need" ultimate. The VAST MAJORITY of people will have no use for Ultimate Edition, and unless you need to connect to a domain, I wouldn't advise upgrading.

Does Vista Home Premium have the Encrypting File System and Security Access Control features that XP Pro has?

As far as I can tell, all of the security access controls are fully implemented in Vista Home Premium, but EFS is only partially supported. You can open, modify, save remotely, etc. a file stored on an EFS volume, but you cannot encrypt a local volume. You need business, enterprise, or ultimate edition to do that. Also, the new Bitlocker drive encryption is only available on enterprise (volume license) and ultimate editions.

Any body have real data about resources used for Ultimate and Business? I red somewhere that Ultimate need more system resources thus need more RAM at its default state than Business and Home Premium. Is it true?

How about system resources used between Business and Home Premium? Are Business need more than HP?

I have a question about Vista Business. Since it does not have media center, does that mean it is missing the codes that Home Premium has to play dvd movies?

No you cannot play DVD movies by default since the codec is deactivated in Business. You have to unlock it by buying it from microsoft (WMP11 will lead you once you try to play DVD movie). Or you can use free codec available in the internet.

If you have pre-installed bloatware on your system, then it is likely that a DVD codec is already installed as well. Just don't uninstall any DVD apps, or you will lose it.
