Since Vista will be such a hardware hog and gobble up the ram, video and cpu like never before how will games fare in this new hostile environment?

With Vista sitting in the background syphoning away valuable resources can we expect huge dips in framerates compared to the now very easy to run XP?

Wow ok, hold your horses there partner.

I just thought it was simple computer knowledge that something which requires a reccomended 1ghz cpu, 1gb of RAM and a DX9 128mb video card would take more background resources thus slowing down current hardware when under gaming stress thats all.

But apparently I don't understand requirements like you do. I guess I will just have to bin my A+ computer technician's certificate then as I am obviously computer illiterate by your standards.

Ok then thanks for the Vista lesson but... whatever. You can't expect everyone to be an expert (like yourself) in something that hasn't even been released yet. I guess in your eyes it is wrong to question, comment on, nor even speculate about something that your considering purchasing when it is released. And that is ok with me becauce you are entitled to your own opinions.

Lol and here I thought the purpous of a forum was to gain knowledge into things you are unsure of or don't know much about. Silly me.

What the heck is up with this post?

Well whatever. I got 20% performance increase on a dual core chip, running dual core games (Quake 4). On a single core game like Doom 3, I got less performance.

If you get Vista, you'd better have alot of dual core games......

I can explain that. Although it looks like I was having an argument with my self it was infact with some guy called bbz or something because he could not handle a simple question being asked about his beloved Vista.. Anyway I beleive that the moderators removed his posts.

But thanks for your response. It has already cleared a couple of things up :)

Lol superhombre, did you go on a kryptonite laced tequila binge again?

Vista takes up more physical memory, but I think you will notice some nice performance gains once the various hardware drivers are optimized for it. Yes, it does go against the concept of an OS to take up so much memory, but Vista and Microsoft Windows in general can't really be classified as just an OS.

Could you classify Vista as a "Computer Deoptimizing System" then? ;)

Well, I was having a discussion w/ a coworker yesterday about memory management between Windows and Unix. He was telling me (as I understood it, I could be wrong) that when Unix starts, it takes control of all the available RAM, then allocates it to programs that need it. The Windows OS, on the other hand, takes a certain amount of RAM for the OS, leaving free RAM for the apps (though many of them will use shared resources from the OS itself). Anyway, my point was going to be no-one would consider Unix a 'Deoptimizing System', so maybe it's a good thing that Vista is using more resources. Just a thought...

after a few tests, doesn't really seem to use more memory. Yes, when it starts Vista seems to use about 150MB more of memory compared to XP, but when start word, or other applications, seems that they use "less" memory than XP.

    XP + Eclipse 3.2.1 + VS.NET 2005 + MSN/SKYPE/ICQ + Outlook 2003 = 763MB
Vista with the same stuff = 771MB

i'm using the same av, and the same versions of applications. exception is that XP i'm using epower management.

(This question was posted on Updating Video Drivers 12-07-06) I have a quick question regarding games on Vista that hasn't been resolved. I recently put Microsoft Flight Simulator X on my Vista OS. It ran great until i changed some settings on my CCC (The Vista Beta Driver and Control Center from the ATI website). After that, there have been some crazy glitches with gameplay including weird colors. I have a screenshot to illustrate this. What can I do to fix this? I deinstalled all the ATI software, just put on the display driver (didn't work). Just used the Microsoft drivers (didn't work). This has happened also on XP with games but I was able to fix this by just putting the Catalyst 11 display driver on and not Control Center. What is going on with my pc? Some people suggested that I reinstall the game. I'm not going to do this just yet (15 gig). I did the repair feature for the game, it still didn't fix anything. With Direct X, Vista came with DX10. Could this be the problem? Also, would having the game installed on an external hard drive have anything to do with the messed up graphics. Plus, this only happens when I do a flight in snow, rain. But there are patches of the sky that are also messed up.
    Any help would be great!

Your co-worker is blowing smoke up your rear end.

Both operating systems work in the same way. Each application that is started after the kernel takes control gets a virtual address space of 2GB (or 4GB if you're running a 32bit app on a 64bit OS, or some huge number if you're running all 64bit). The application has no clue about what's actually happening to memory they just ask the OS for more memory, and it's allocated to them. The OS then manages where it is in the actual memory space, or in virtual memory, etc. (the swap file). Vista is going to be using more resources, period, because of it's graphics intensive operations, as well as general bloat. Unix is HIGHLY optimized, and MUCH more scalable than Windows (you won't get XP on both a phone and a supercomputer).
