Anyone notice the lack of applications he/she had open in Linux compared to Vista?

well ubuntu is...free while Vista is not. They are different programs for different audiences. ;)

    I encourage experimentation! :D

How do you figure? The thing is that the applications in Ubuntu were spread out across 4 different workspaces. I'd say there were more active programs actually.

Moving on, while I am an Ubuntu user and in no way a fan of Vista, I think Beryl is a bit overdone by most people. Who needs stars rolling up as they close a window or icons jumping all over the place? I'm currently testing Ubuntu 7.04 which comes with Compiz out of the box, and I don't even use it most of the time. I've never come across a version that's been completely stable personally.

That being said, it is still fairly stable for a beta release (arguably as stable as Aero was when I tested RC2), and I think it speaks volumes that it can do all those things on an Intel Extreme 2 while Aero struggles on the Intel GMA 950... nearly 4 years newer.

Viewing folder contents isn't an application. I saw one browser window playing a YouTube video, a couple of command prompt windows, and some folder views open in Linux. In Vista I saw WMP, calculator, notepad, MediaCenter, and solitaire open. Unless Linux is really bad at memory and program management, that doesn't seem an equal load on the 2.

That looks very cool. That being said, what in the world did he accomplish there? The only thing i saw happen in that whole time was a youtube video get played...

If moving things around was the task being compared, Ubuntu is clearly the winner.

The vista video and the Ubuntu video were made by two completely different people. Then a 3rd person came in and combined them into 1 showdown video. The two original authors were in different midsets of what they were going to show off.

If you're tryng to get at Ubuntu not having a notepad, calculator, or solitaire, you're wrong. Linux is also much better at program and memory management than Vista has. I've had MANY more programs opened up in a linux install with full 3d effects, like in that Ubuntu movie, and it didnt slow down. Having half of those programs opened in Vista brought the computer down to a crawl. And having 3/4th of those programs opened in XP brings my computer to a crawl.

Not much of a showdown video if it's purpose is to show off the strengths of Linux over Windows, unless you like waving windows and seeing sparklies. OOO! Pretty!

Totally .Couldn't agree with you more here. I don't think eye candy displays are showdowns at all...unless it's a fashion show. Me, I'd rather see a macho display of power at the ol' OK corral.

Also, its not really a true Vista Ubuntu showdown. Beryl does not ship with Ubuntu whereas Aero does with Vista(premium & above). If you want to compare Vista GUI vs Ubuntu GUI compare with both systems at stock, with Ubuntu running Gnome/KDE not one which has been heavily customized.

Actually, Ubuntu 7.04 will ship with Compiz out of the box, which does give a nice UI, it just doesn't happen to be too stable at this point (but hey, Fesity is still in alpha stage technically).

The bottom line is that there is much more to an OS besides eye candy. And indeed, there are many more benefits to choosing Ubuntu over Vista than just the GUI, just as there are benefits to choosing Vista over Ubuntu. Comparing the UI should be nowhere near the top of the list when comparing operating systems. $0.02

Holy ****!!! $920+ USD??? That is amazing.

That style doesn't even come default as it stands now? Apples to oranges even more so now, hardly a showdown for out of box performance of GUI. Still very cool though :)

Bringing up the pricing of Vista leads me to the question: why is Vista so expensive?

Expensive? I got my Vista Ultimate OEM for US$196, which is about what I paid for XP Pro OEM when it first came out. And Vista Ultimate has a lot more in it.

Because they can, to be perfectly honest. Simple economics here, demand for an OS is high, supply of a viable OS is low (bassically 3) for the number of computers on the market. If they charged $500 for an OS we would all pay for it, because we need it. Until they hit the price ceiling of what people will pay, i would expect to see prices go up or stay the same until people refuse to pay for it and start using alternatives. If you owned a business, would you provide your product as cheaply as possible just because you're a nice guy? rhetorical question ;)
