I'm plugging a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop External Harddrive into my Asus G2S-A1 Notebook and running Vista Premium.

    My problem is that the drivers will not load. Everytime I try to re-install the driver I receive the message;

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your
device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an
error while attempting to install it. USB Mass Storage Device.

Ive tried plugging it into to different usb ports - tried checking for drivers with Seagate - none are supplied, and have read that this is quite a common error through Vista.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem, and how they managed to resolve it.

    Cheers, Rava

    Ah...

    I think...

    I see...

    the problem.

    My suggestion?

    Eliminate the problem.

Either that, or hope really hard that Seagate makes some drivers soon.

Ok, Ok I get your point about Vista *and am still having a giggle over your reply*

However I really would still like to resolve the problem whilst running Vista, and without me having to load another OS onto the notebook.

    Cheers, Rava

No driver disk came with the external hd - its plug and play and works fine whilst just plugging into my XP OS desktop. Have checked out support at the Seagate website and no help there at all. No drivers are supplied for the hard drive.

Its definitely a vista problem, and am still hoping to resolve it.

All right, serious response. Have you tried booting the computer with the drive already attached? That might help it recognize it at startup. :)

Drive letter is assigned, however a yellow check mark in device manager does show. It tells me that there is no driver installed.

Does this occur on all your USB ports or just one? Do other USB devices able to be recognized? If it is then it's probably your ex HD.

I'm having the same problem with a USB jump drive (Kingston Data traveler) as well as my USB hard drive.

It's a corrupt mass storage device driver but I can't find a fix for it. The drive worked before. I've used it. Now it doesn't work.

I'm running vista ultimate 64. Device manager has a yellow exclamation mark on it and error code 32. A google search for Code 32 comes up with nothing usefull.

Also the drive isn't showing in disk management because at first I thought both drivers were trying to use the same letter.
