I use the start menu search feature regularly to reach my files quickly, but it's started to malfunction. For instance, I have a text file called "Games.txt" that I use to keep track of all the games I want to play. When I type "gam", the text file comes up as an option, but when I type the "e", it disappears, and it tells me there are not results. It doesn't come back again until I type "game.". Also, I have another text file called "Movies.txt". Again, it's there until "movi", disappears until "movies", reappears at "movies.". I've tried reindexing, but it didn't seem to work.

Try disabling search indexing. Restart. Turn search indexing back on.

Create a new file called movies.bmp - see if the disappearing act happens. Then, create a new file called movies (no extension) - see if it happens again.

Well, like before, when I type the "e" and the "s", it tells me there are no results.

Did you install, remove, or tweak anything immediately prior to when the problem started? Have you don'e a complete malware/spyware/virus scan?

Just do a system restore back to when it was working.
