How do I make a copy of the Vista Installation DVD? My friend has an original Vista Ultimate DVD and I want to make a clean installation DVD (or something like Windows Anytime Upgrade DVD) from it.

Be careful of the situations like this. What you describe is piracy and you could get banned for that sort of thing on this forum. Why don't you just borrow your friends disc to do the clean install?

I want to make a copy of it so that I can make a clean installation again in the future if necessary. I hope it's not illegal. I have a legal Vista product key that comes with my notebook and was trying to follow the instructions in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228

Having a Vista product key does not mean it will work since based on your signature your rig comes with Vista Home Premium and not Vista Ultimate. Also, when you bought your DV6700t, it should've instructed you to burn a set of recovery CDs. The very first bullet point on the link is very clear:

You can only install the SAME VERSION of Vista you already bought. If you're laptop came with Home Premium, you can NOT install Ultimate.

Yes, I know only the same version of Vista can be installed which is exactly what I want to do. If I read the Clean Install thread correctly, a Vista DVD contains ALL VERSIONS of Vista. It just happens that the Vista DVD which my friend has is a Vista Ultimate.

And I have already burned the HP recovery discs. What I want is a CLEAN install disc which doesn't have the pre-installed trial software.

    If it's the OEM/Retail DVD, absolutely no problem. It's 2 universal DVDs (32 & 64bits).

It's against Microsoft's EULA to make a copy of the disk but since you are using your own legit serial number, it's not illegal. Just google " backuping a DVD" on google and you should find plenty of informations.

You cannot make a copy of your friends Vista DVD. You never owned a original copy to begin with.

Though you can use your friends dvd, just not duplicate it. You legitimate vista key is seperate from the Vista DVD's.
