What's the difference between Vista Home Premium and Basic?
-
Is there third party software that would substitute the difference, or even better ?
-
umm no. not to the same effect as Aero. if your hardware can't handle Aero, then go for basic. if i can, then go for premuim. as simple as that.
-
No. Just get home premium. Its not like the price difference is enough to make it not worth it.
-
Also - aren't there other limitations in Vista Basic like only 3 open windows/programmes, etc.?
Also: You can always set Vista Home Premium to run in a Vista Basic Theme or even the old Windows 95 theme... -
-
BTW, when they say...No Aero in Vista Basic doesnt mean the Vista basic theme. if you have an Aero capable GPU/WDDM drivers, then you get the Aero like theme without any transparency, flip3D or the preview windows. Other than that it looks exactly like any other version of Vista.

Vista Basic is pure basic OS. You have preaty much nothing on it... about XO level but with instant search, and limited to support up to 8GB of RAM.
Vista Home Premium you have:
- Vista 64-Bit, supports up to 16GB of RAM (128+GB RAM for the higher editions).
- Windows Media Center.
- Aero with transparency.
- Flip 3D
- Application thumbnail preview on Alt+tab and task bar
- 32/64-bit DVD playback codec
- Snipping tool (tool to allow you to take screenshots with several options and save them as picture (or e-mail) in several formats.
- Tablet PC support with all it's tools
- Additional Windows Games
- System backup (Business and Ultimate has Complete PC backup, which does an image of your hard drive and you can put it where you want (CD's/DVD/ USB mem stick / eSATA HDD / Network drive / external USB or firewire HDD, etc..)
- Allows you to go back in time of a file, folder, drive or even the system. Got a virus? You might be able to restore your system this way.
- Remote desktop client
- Windows Meeting Space
- Network Projector support -
You could buy Basic and combine it with Windowblinds. It has a transparency feature and combined with the Vista look it'll look like Vista Premium. Windowblinds sells for $19.99
I use Windowblinds 6 with Windows XP and it looks sweet. -
Yes and slow down your system as it uses the CPU to draw. Aero (not Aero Basic) uses the GPU to render.
And Vista Home Premium is 50$ more Canadian RETAIL... it's much cheaper if he buys it OEM. Home Basic is REALLY not worth it... I call that being ripped off. -

It literally takes me 3 seconds to install a new Windowblinds theme and I can uninstall it if I like. It took me 2-3 minutes to setup WB to the way I like it. -
Will the OP be running more then 8GB of ram anytime soon before 7 is released? I doubt it.
