I currently have Vista Home Premium and want 7 Professional. They say that an upgrade is not possible, and that you need a clean install. There are two ways to interpret this:

-You must buy a full version, the upgrade disc will not work.
    OR
-You can use an upgrade disc, you just have to reinstall everything.

Which one is correct? Basically I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy a full version or just the upgrade. (I checked the sticky, I didn't find this answered specifically.)

You can buy an upgrade disc and do a clean install. I did this myself.

The upgrade is possible, but you need to buy a full professional license I believe.

Or upgrade to 7 hp then anytime to pro.

I second yejun, you can't upgrade from vista home premium to win 7 professional. I have heard, as coolguy stated, that you can do a clean install from an upgrade disc, so this way you don't have to pay for a full install disc.

I don't mind doing a clean install. In fact I would prefer it.

I just want to confirm that if I buy the W7 Pro Upgrade (from win741.com) I can use it on my Vista Home Premium.

    Technically it's possible.

Believe me, I did buy the student upgrade 64-bit Win 7 Pro and clean installed to upgrade my Vista 32-bit HP. I did not do anything special for the clean install, except making a bootable USB drive.

Yup. As coolguy says, you're allowed to use the upgrade license and disc... but you may have to do a clean install with it... no biggie.
