Hi all, just started customizing my install of vista, and was wondering if it’s possible to change the icons for DVD’s etc when they are inserted into the drive.

I know you can change the icon for the drive itself, as I have already done this, but when I insert a disc; it will come up with a picture of the disc displaying what type it is, getting rid of my custom icon.

I have icons I would like to replace the standard windows ones with if anyone knows how? Cheers

Heres an example of what i mean:

This is my custom disc drive icon
    disc 1.JPG

I want to change the second one!!

And this is what comes up when a disc is inserted

Can you add a shortcut to the desktop when this changes, then adjust the properties from there?

Well I have tried that... I can of course change the icon for the Shortcut on the desktop, but it does not affect My Computer at all.

There must be a list of icons for different formats of disks somewhere in a .dll or something... I think that is what I need to find.

    Any other ideas?

I personally have not tried it but it looks safe to use, a freeware program called Drive Icon Changer might work for what you need.

If you try it let me know? :)

also some good info HERE that might work if you do not want to dl that program

OK, I’ll look into that program.

By selecting properties on the empty DVD drive, and then navigating to details, and finding “class icon path” on the dropdown menu, I have discovered that all the icons used are in imageres.dll.

I have opened imageres.dll using IconDeveloper to check that they are there, and they are. Lol.

Anyway, what I need to do is replace the systems default icons in imageres.dll with the icons that I want!

If anyone has any tips before i do this i would greatly appreciate it!

When you open imageres.dll with IconDeveloper, does it tell you all the numbers for each icon? If yes, and if you can tell me the numbers for the DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-RW icons, then I will be able to tell you which registry keys to change.

Right, had a look, and according to IconDeveloper, the numbers of the drives are:
    DVD - 37
    DVD-R - 38
    DVD-RAM - 39
    DVD-ROM - 40
    DVD-RW - 41
    DVD (2) - 56
    CD - 61
    CD-R - 62
    CD-ROM - 63
    CD-RW - 64
    DVD+R - 172
    DVD+RW - 173

    That what you were after?

Yes, these are the numbers I was looking for.

However, I can't seem to find any key with imageres.dll that is related to the numbers you posted. Normally, you will see something like this in the registry as DefaultIcon path: %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll,-XX (XX is the number)

Hmm ok... So would a possible solution be to replace the icons that are in the .dll? I’m not sure if you can do this with IconDeveloper i will have to have to have a look.

Do you think that would be a safe thing to do?

Also what path in regedit would you usually find the registry keys for icons in??

    Cheers

From what I read, you can edit the contents inside the imageres.dll file with a program called PE Explorer. People have success with this, but I've never tried myself though.

    http://www.heaventools.com/

If you can edit the imageres.dll file, then I think this will be a safer route than editing the registry, since I can't find any key related to those numbers. What path in the registry? They're located in many different places, some are easy to identify, since the path and name is readable. However, some are located in HKCR\CLSID for example, these are not easy to identify, because the key name is made up of a bunch of letters and numbers instead of an application or file name.
