Vista retail comes as a single 32-bit version DVD. It's packaging contains information that points you to the Microsoft site above. There you can get the 64-bit version of Vista or the 32-bit version on CDs instead of DVD for the price of shipping the discs. This is Microsoft trying to make sure they don't pay to create and package discs you're never going to use. They put it on you to get them if you want them.

The Windows Anytime Upgrade in the second link allows you to upgrade an existing copy of Vista Home/Premium/Business to Vista Ultimate.

Basically, one is Microsoft offering to provide you alternate versions of the full OS you've already purchased, 64-bit or 32-bit on CDs, for the cost of shipping. The other site is offering software that upgrades your lower tier version of Vista to the highest tier Vista Ultimate.

As for a purcahse and download version of either, I'm not aware of anything like that.

Sorry for any confusion. I don't intend to upgrade Vista versions but rather run the 64bit version of the one I currently own. I'm trying to find out the quickest route to do this without having to wait for the disk to arrive.

So does the upgrade disk contain a full version, or would you have to use both your original disc and the new one to do a clean install?

according to all the articles in this forum, the anytime disk contains all versions of vista and you need to use your license to upgrade your 32-bit version to the 64-bit version of the same version (ie home premium 32 to home premium 64
