I'm having a problem with my laptop; before it would wake up in the middle of the night because of the automatic update that was set at 3 am. Now it wakes up in the middle of the night and when i log into my account i see that windows media center is loaded. How do I stop windows media center from loading and waking up my computer? Or is something else the issue here?

Well i know that there have been problems with computers waking from sleep in the middle of the night before but that was a vista bug, now i don't know what's up with your computer but i know that you can tweak some settings to make sure that no program can wake your computer from sleep/hibernation but i don't remember it. I'll go look it up.

Is it plugged into a network? Because there's a think called "Wake On LAN" which is sometimes enabled by default, which can sometimes be triggered randomly. You may also have a virus or something which is set to "phone home" in the middle of the night.

My understanding is that when it is in hibernation, it can only be woke up through Wake On Lan/Ring, and even that is rare for Notebook(may be models targetting business users have this capability).

If it is in suspend/sleep mode, it does honour timer based setup, mine for example would wake up after 15 minutes in sleeping mode then hibernate.

Calvin: Thanks a lot man, I appreciate it. Hope that tweak you find works.

Pitabred: Yea, I'm plugged into a network here at my school. Do you know of any way to change the Wake up on Lan setting? Or should I just pull out my ethernet cable when I put it on Hibernate?

It should be in the properties page of the device manager (type devi... and it'll show up on the start menu). Right click your ethernet card and access the properties, and switch to the advanced tab. There should be a Wake on Lan setting and it can be disabled.

I'm using wireless, have not used wired connections for a long time ;))

Check all devices in Device Manager to see which have power management options (usually modem, network, USB, but may be others). Then check on those tabs to make sure "Allow this device to wake the computer" is disabled. Also look in the Task Scheduler under computer management to make sure there are no daily tasks set to run at the time when your computer wakes up.

Check Media center & event viewer settings to see if there is any updates are set to take place at night. This might be the reason MC is loaded when the system wakes up in the middle of the night.

Didn't the OP say that this was occurring when in hibernation as well as in sleep mode? If so aren't the task manager and update app out of the picture when hibernating? I know they both can kick in in sleep mode, but in hibernation the machine is off and hence no way to wake up, except the wake on lan option. I do know THAT has the capability to actually turn the machine back on.

It's really weird, because I checked my wake on lan option and it is not set on. Not only that, but now even if I shut down my computer and turn it on, Windows MEdia Center loads automatically. :( save this poor soul

I'm having similar problem with Windows Media Center waking Vista OS computer from hibernation. WMC is set to Manual download TV Listing Guide but looks like it's trying to Auto download so I ran setup again and reset to manual tv listing updates... same results. When I get home from work, power light is blinking and laptop has changed from hibernation to sleep mode. I wake it from sleep and enable internet connection then first thing it tries to do is download WMC TV guide.

According to Event Viewer, ehSched is trying to run every day at or about 8:00 AM. How do I disable "ehSched"? I poked around in Task Scheduler and Services and didn't fine it there... :(
