Windows Vista Upgrade by default does not allow you to do clean install - 'upgrading' without an actual XP installation by showing original XP disc, entering original XP serno - which I found truly retarded, arrogant and in fact one of the things that makes me refuse to upgrade.

However I just came across a trick, according to internal MS docs, on how to perform a clean upgrade:

    1. Boot from Vista disc
    2. Install the appropriate edition without entering your key
    3. When you done, boot up normally with your freshly installed Vista
    4. Put back Vista disc and start it
    5. "Upgrade" your Vista (with same edition) using your key, as you would do normally
    6. Enjoy...
