    Hello There,

I had an AV program doing a scheduled scan on my computer but I decided to shut the computer down by going to start > shut down.

When I hit it, I was given the prompt "Are you sure you want to stop scanning?"

    I hit "NO"

But the screen flashed once and the computer went through normal shut down.

    Did I harm my computer?

    Thanks!

    No.

    You just cancelled a scan.

I heard that maybe the hard drive could have been involved?

Unfortunately I did not glance at the LED for the activity, but what if the scan was going through the HDD?

And also, if I pressed "NO", why did the screen flash?

you wont have damaged anything but its always best to stop the scan first in the anti virus program.
screens flash for various reasons for example after a windows update says you need to reboot as you have the download page open.
easiest way to find out is turn your computer on. if it works its fine and if it doesnt then post back and we can help.

It booted up perfectly fine. I let it run for two hours just to see if something was scanning. I shut it down, but there was another brief screen flash and then it shut down perfectly.

The screen flash is not something significant, is it?

    nope. dont worry.
best to do a scan when you know youve got plenty of time to let it finish.

what anti virus are you using and what hard drive have you got.
