Sound like you have a bad application that leaks the memory.

Bummer, if that is the case is there any way of finding out which app it is?

Check your process manager (ctrl+ald+del on most Windows machines) and see what it says about memory.

You also want to check your virtual memory settings. Have you changed around your pagefile settings at all? Tweaked them according to any guides? That can often cause you to see these warnings.

Are you sure that all you applications are legit? Windows doesn't leak the memory, but other application would. 40% on your CPU seems to indicate that something is running in the background. I can't tell you what it is because I can't see your computer.

That does sound like a lot. 40% CPU usage is way too much for an otherwise idle system. You should figure out what program that is and kill it.

Can you not find the Task Manager? It should look like the attached image. Generally ctrl+alt+del will bring that up on Windows XP. You may have to click the "Task Manager" button. The last column is the memory usage.

It sounds like you have a fair bit of work to get your machine running like it should be.

Everything is fully legit, apps VST's the lot.

when i changed from Vista to XP, it took me a while to find the correct drivers for everything and during this process i installed quite a few that didnt work...

I didnt uninstall or delete the ones that are not being used, could this have negative effect?

    cheers

It could be. You may have to uninstall whatever you don't use and see if it changes anything. What is apps VST?
