What are the proper settings to get VLC to take the 5.1/7.1 sound source from a movie and convert it to headphones?

I have a X-fi sound card, and have tried CMSS 3d, but it apparently does NOT take the 5.1 signal, it merely creates the 'effect' of surround with a stereo source. I'm looking for a way to truly get 5.1 sound in 2.1. A ton of effects i've seen do the same, simulate surround from a stereo source. Is there no way to do this?

I don't get it; Do you want surround to stereo, or stereo to surround? (or both?)

I don't use VLC, but CCCP by default will downmix everything played through it to stereo.

Why don't you just unplug the X-fi and use the onboard audio chip?
