New to Vista (Asus M50Vm arrived Friday) and tweaking/playing. I didn't notice when, but now my user folder is appearing on my desktop. I have selected "show hidden folders," turned off UAC, loaded a bunch of software...

Anyway, is this normal? And no, it's not a shortcut (have a shortcut to D: that looks entirely different.) It's also not a copy. I created a text file in that folder and it showed up in c:\Users\<name> too...

Right-click the desktop, then click personalize. On the left panel it should say "change desktop icons". You can add or remove things like computer, network, user folder, recycle bin, etc from the desktop.

Right-click on desktop->personalize->Change desktop icons (in the left-hand colum), and from there you can show or hide the user folder on the desktop.
