Installing XP will allow you to reformat your Ubuntu partition, but you may have to run a Vista repair install AFTER reinstalling XP to get your boot sector sorted out. It should be fairly simple.

So first backup any critical data, then

    1) Insert XP disc
    2) Format Ubuntu partition to NTFs
    3) Install XP on partition
    4) If you can't boot correctly to Vista and/or XP, insert Vista disc and repair the installation to refresh the boot config
