I am getting a great deal on upgrades for Windows through my job. I currently have x64 Vista Home Premium on my laptop.

I am able to get vista business upgrade, should I do that before upgrading to Windows 7 or should I go straight from Vista home premium to Windows 7?

What version of Win7 would I get going from Home Premium and from Business?

    -Core2Duo P7350
    -4GB Ram
-320GB of HD space (running low due to photography, need larger external soon)
    1yr old laptop.

You can't really upgrade from Home Premium to Business. The only upgrade path Microsoft provides is Home Premium to Ultimate. The only way to get to Business from Home Premium is to clean install.

The equivalent of Business for Windows 7 is Professional.

    Go straight to Windows 7.

Choose a version of Windows 7 based on which features you want... not what you have now.

Really? How is it that they sell upgraded versions of Vista? On my vista Anytime Upgrade (before Win7), they always allowed me to upgrade to Business or better yet to Ultimate. I would have had to do a clean install to do these upgrades?

EDIT: Oh, well this sucks. I can also get Vista Enterprise. Would I have to do a clean install with that as well?

I am getting it through my company. They only give on key and it works to upgrade to a equivalent version of windows as to what I have in Vista.

From my knowledge you CAN upgrade edition, but you can't downgrade. I never tested that, if you wonder.

Hmmm... if you're sure about that, and you're not paying for it, then I guess I'd move to Vista Business first so that the upgrade to Windows 7 would give me Windows 7 Professional. However, as Lithus mentioned, there's no in-place upgrade path from Vista H.Prem. to Vista Business, so you'll need to do a clean install (which can be done using the upgrade disc as long as some version is already installed on the system).

Well, I checked again, and I now found that it is a Win 7 Professional key that would get.

I am still a bi scare to do the upgrade. I want t get a >1.5TB external hd over thanksgiving. I can back up my documents on my current external HD but I would not be able to do a full lights out backup with my current 200GB external HD. I only have 30GB free on my laptop.

Should I wait or should I go ahead and just backup my documents and upgrade to Win 7?
