    Good Morning

I upgraded to Windows 7 everything went very smoothly except with the DVD player. I have an Acer Aspire 5610 and the DVD is an:
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA. I get a Code 48 error message saying that windows won't allow the software to install as it has had problems with windows. Contact the mfg for a new hardware driver. The DVD player runs but it won't play and it doesn't show up that it is a device.

I have looked everywhere and I don't have an answer. Acer told me that this computer was made to work with Vista and I am basically SOL.

Can anyone help me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I tried removing and reinstalling it several times and get the same problem.

First off, a DVD drive shouldn't need a driver in Windows 7. They are picked up natively.

But anyhow, try installing the driver with "run as admin" and/or with compatibility modes. If you're using 64-bit version of 7, and the issue is that it won't accept the driver because it's not signed, then you need to turn off forced driver signing.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have the 32 version of 7. I tried installing in in compatibility mode but it would just give me the same error message.

I don't know how to turn off forced driver signing, can you please tell me how to do that. I have uninstalled it again but I just keep getting the same error message.

Right now my computer doesn't recognize that I have a DVD at all.

This has some of the symptoms of a common problem with the UpperFilters and LowerFilters, so it could be your problem. At any rate it won't cause a problem to try the fix. Read the Microsoft Article linked. Don't be concerned about the reference to Vista, it also is the same for Windows 7 issues.

My computer is reading my DVD now but unfortunately it is not recognizing the burner. Am I asking too much to get that working too? Any suggestions?

Maybe I should just stop while I got one working!

Installing or uninstalling burner software can lead to this problem also. Try deleting the upper and lower filters once more as directed in the MS article, reboot and see if your burner is restored.

If the burner is not restored in the previous attempt and it is shown in the device manager, uninstall it, reboot and let windows discover the hardware again.

If that doesn't work, well, let me think about it ;)
