I want to un-install this crappy program (I never use it and it keeps popping up everywhere), but I read here: http://www.petri.co.il/disable_windows_messenger_in_windows_xp.htm

That it could harm your computer. How is this so, and is this true?

I tried to disable it using the instructions provided in the above link, however in Outlook Express there is no "windows messenger" option under "tools", and the other 3 methods do not apply because I don't have XP pro. I just need some way to make it stop appearing in my task bar and trying to coerce me into signing in...

If your Windows is up to date, you should be able to "uninstall" it the regular way (select it under add/remove programs -> Windows Components)
(It isn't uninstalled, but they remove any shortcuts to it, and it no longer automatically pops up)

That's pretty much the best you're going to get though.

Most guides like the one you've found do the same, in a much messier way (because they're dated from before Microsoft released an update to Windows that lets you remove the program)

Their method should still work though, and isn't harmful if you do as they say. :)

Nice, I did as you have suggested. I hope it works. I was a little hesitant because I didn't want to do anything that would potentially harm my computer (Yes... I'm anal when it comes to personal investments!). Thanks bro.

Well your computer wouldn't have blown up. ;) You would just have had to re-install windows but that is a pain sometimes. lol
