    Hi all,

My laptop is a HP DV5-1106AX.... About 6 years old.... Around 2 weeks back, my HDD stopped working and I was asked to get it replaced....

Since SSDs are in market, I decided to get myself a Samsung 840 series 128 GB ......

After I plug it in, insert a Windows 7 disk and restart, I get the error

"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" (Pressing any key gets me the same message over and over)
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del at this stage just reboots the system and the same thing happens again

Start-Up Test, Run-In Test and Hard Disk test perform with no errors.....

When I put an Ubuntu installation disk in, I was able to install Ubuntu.... But after that, my DVD drive is not detecting any CD's whilst in Ubuntu.....

When I tried using Windows installation disk at this stage, the setup loaded files but after choosing my language/location,I was getting the error "CD/DVD driver missing -- please locate driver and press continue" or something.....

There was some terminal command I found over the internet which did tell me that me BIOS is AHCI .... (and in my BIOS I have no option of choosing between ADE/AHCI )

As luck would have it, I came across this terminal command -- "sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=1m count 8 && sync" and bam! I guess my HD got formatted again !!...

But now even the same old Ubuntu installation disk gives me the same error.... as with other installation disks.....

All the installation disks work fine when tested in another PC...

    Any suggestions ??

Clean the lense of the optical drive. Some times it gets dirty, if this does not work you may need to get a new optical drive.......

It does sound like there is something physically wrong with your dvd drive. you could try installing win7 or linux from USB drive.
