    Hi guys,

I had recently posted this article in another topic but realised that it was in the wrong bit  but anyways, i cant download files from internet explorer. It brings up the box with 'open' 'save' and 'cancel' i have tried both open and save and it sometimes asks if i want to run the file and i always press run. It looks as though its trying to load something and then once its finished it just goes off which it should and then it should load up whatever it is that i have downloaded but it never does and its sending me insane :mad2:

I have tried everything i can think of, deleting temp files, restarting my laptop and in a presious thread i made someone had suggested i reinstall explorer or something like that and then when i went to do it i realised i couldnt as i wouldnt be able to install anything back and i would be big time stuck!

Anyones help is welcome as i need this problem sorted before i get put into a mental home lol

    Thanks guys!

Are you running IE7? You should always use the save button, as it will be the easiest to manually execute the file after downloading. Your best bet will be to switch to Firefox and let it be.

Have you ever downloaded anything on this computer, or is this a new problem?

are you SURE it is not downloading? Did you check in your profiles DOWNLOAD folder (the default location of IE)

START > PROFILE NAME (top right of start menu) > double click DOWNLOAD folder. ANything in there?

    Hey,

Yeh i have done before its been quite a recent problem, it started around december time but i thought it was the one thing in particular so i ignored it. It's been quite recently i noticed it more often. Im most positive its not downloading as my boyfriend has tried saving it in a test folder and looking for temp files to open it but sadly nothing has been found. I looked in that folder like you suggested and nothing is there just an old game i used to play is in it. Thanks though

You may have already done these but worth a shot...

C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\Users\"username"\documents ( or whichever file you first tried to save to )
Where user name is the name of the account you were logged into when you downloaded the file

Make sure you have "view hidden files "checked in the apperance and personalisation settings in control panel or you won't be able to find appdata folder as it is a hidden file. Also note that this is a temp file so it may have been deleted since you first downloaded the file Ie. you may have to download the file again.

Also heard that AVG can cause problems so turn off any AV and try to download a file, also have you tried to download a file to a usb flash drive?

As a troubleshooting step, go to START > CONTROL PANEL >USER ACCOUNTS

Create a new user account. Log off your current account. Log into the new one.

Try and download. Report the results.

Reboot and tap the f8 key from the moment the screen flashes....chose SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING

Wait for Windows to load...it will take longer than usual (more than twice as long).

Your resolution when it loads will be higher and things will look different

Load IE and download anything. Work or not?

Nope nothing works. Im in safe mode, tried downloading this game from big fish which i know works as i have previously downloaded from there. It should bring up the game client to begin download and installation and like in normal mode, it never comes up. It does this with everything

    Hi there.
My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. is there any way that i would be able to get a recovery Disc.

If i got all of my Important files and Folder ETC put them on a flash drive and did a full factory reset on my system do you think that this would help? or could this cause my problems.

because i download music and games could i have a virus on my system that is stopping me from downloading??

    Thanks

That is possible but a bit drastic yet, what anti-virus do you have running I have seen a few of them exhibit this behavior before, mainly AVG and McAfee.

That is not an antivirus--it is anti-malware

Never seen AVG do it...seen mcafee suites and norton internet protection

need a list of everything security related, including firewalls, antivirus, antispyware.

    Go here,

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

    click on
    RUN AUTORUNS now from Live.Sysinternals.com

If it runs, choose FILE > EXPORT AS and save the file as autoruns.txt

    attach that to next post

Go to start>all programs> system recovery>pc recovery and then depending on what brand of laptop you have , you will eventually be led to a menu where you have a choice between either a Microsoft Restore or PC recovery. Select PC recovery and follow the menu.

Good point, try setting your Internet security to "Medium" before doing a full factory restore. If you are already doing the restore--ignore.

Every brand of laptop is a little different, Sony is about the only brand of laptop that I have not owned. Go to the sony section of this forum and ask how to do a full factory system restore, not a Microsoft restore.

    a few ways...

If you use Windows Vista, click Start
. Then type the following command in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER:
    inetcpl.cpl
The Internet Options dialog box appears.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
    Start Internet Explorer again.

    or just,

go to Tools Menu, Internet Options, Advanced Tab and click on Reset… button.

It helps if you are logged on as an Admin ;)

He has downloaded fire from his pc then sent it to me and extracted it that way. it install fines but doesnt download anything still.

He has also reset IE7 For me and that hasnt done anything. it is still doing the same thing.

He thinks that there is nothing wrong with IE7 and Firefox. it is something to do with the OS.

    I would suggest the following:

Have your boyfriend download "Malwarebytes" from www.malwarebytes.org.
Then, have him send it to you and install it.
Run the program (I would suggest going back into "Safe Mode" by hitting F8 at the boot screen) and see if it catches anything that is blocking the ports.

I have recently run into a slew of viruses that get in through old versions of Java scripts that cripple the system after a few restarts on some computers I have worked on. Malwarebytes got rid of them and then I was able to download things again. If this fixes the problem, be sure to then get a good quaility anti-virus program whether it be a free one or one you purchase at the store and install it. Finally, update Malwarebytes and run it once more inside your account in regular windows as well as run an updated scan with whatever anti-virus you choose.

    Hopefully this helps.

    BBGus

After you do a full system restore it will re-initiate the trial antivirus software that came with your Sony (this comes with just about every new consumer grade laptop). Follow the recommended set-up procedure immediately following the restore operation, and make sure the laptop's power adapter is plugged in throughout the entire procedure. Edit: I believe this is the info you will need to perform the full restore. http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId=C459775&fes=true

I also strongly recommend that you make a set of recovery disks before you do a full system restore (if you don't already have them) http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C196685
