I obtained this unit with no HD, had a good 40GB one here. Formatted it and installed it, but is not recognized when I try to install XP from CD. Can someone smarter than I am please help?
The XP cd is just an install version, not from Toshiba. I have XP recovery discs from Compaq desktop, but it says they have to be Toshiba? Is there a work-around possible?

SATA hard drive by any chance? If so, you'll have to install SATA drivers for the computer.

Hi, thanks for comeback.I'm new to forums, still dumb! I took this HD out of a I/O-Magic USB external HD I have, it happened to be a Toshiba MK4032GAX HDD2D10 C ZLO1 S/N 461V4601S 836 EC.A. I don't know how to tell, but don't think it would be SATA.
The original HD had crashed on the notebook, guy got data saved and Staples said it would cost $200. or so to repair ,he didn't bother. Everything seems to work, just won't recognize HD. It does change on screen message when I plug it in, so must be comnnecting somewhere.I can install all the preliminary XP info, when it gets to Windows, says no HD reconized. Rover71

A lot of times if you can fully install Windows, but when Windows tries to load it says no HD recognized, it can mean that the HD has bad sectors. You could possibly run chkdsk from the command prompt. However, if Windows doesn't even recognize your hard drive you'll need a 3rd party utility to check the drive.

You should look into Seagate's seatools or Western Digital's Data Lifeguard. Google these utilities. You will have to burn them to a CD as an ISO (I hope you can do this on the computer you are currently using). Then run the CD at startup.

The utilities should be able to tell you if you have a bad HD, and whether the sectors are recoverable.

Hi--The HD worked OK in the external case, I had a backup on it, which I deleted & reformated the HD before installing the Toshiba adapter. This 'puter has a CD-DVD burner on it no problem there. I copied Petri's Slipstreaming info, looks a bit complicated, though of trying it when I get time. Your opinion? I did download the XP SP2 266MB part.I will ck. the utilities you suggested also. Tks--
