I bought a Toshiba A135-2276, pre-loaded with Vista. Installed XP Pro, then ran the drivers and applications from the backup disk. There are a number of devices that aren't running properly. From the device manager they include:

    Ethernet Contoller
    SM Bus Controller
    Unknown Device
    Unknown Device
    Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I assume one of the unknown devices is the Wireless Adapter, which isn't recognized. Toshiba customer support wasn't any help.

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Thanks

Still not much success. Has anyone else tried installing XP on a Toshiba A135 notebook?

Tried, yes. Still trying, yes. Successful, no.

The biggest problem seems to be with the video driver. I've tried the driver on the CD (for Vista), I've downloaded the driver from the ATI website as well as every one close to it. I've tried other ATI drivers from Toshiba's website on notebooks close to ours (like the A105). I even downloaded a tool from driverheaven.net that's supposed to install the normal Radeon drivers on a laptop (our card the X200M is listed in the supported cards). Nothing's worked. One piece of advice though, don’t disable the device driver that is installed (vgasafe) like I did. It’s unrecoverable and you’ll have to reinstall XP again.

Essentially this laptop is useless to me and I’m returning it this weekend. I can’t install XP because the drivers don’t exist to make it work and I don’t want to sty with Vista because half my software doesn’t work with it; not to mention it soooo slooooow.

I think the lesson learned is do some research ahead of time and buy a laptop that has XP drivers for it.

The problem with the X200M or as it is better know Radeon Xpress 200 is that it is an OEM only part and not covered by ATIs universal Catalyst drivers. The solution however is simple. Download Omega Drivers they work perfectly and can be found at http://www.omegadrivers.net To get your wireless G working google Atheros wireless G. As far as the SMBUS controller that can be downloaded from AMD/ATI just look under chipset drivers for xpress 200. The ethernet controller is Realtek and a google search will find you compatable XP drivers. The other two unknown devices are quick launch buttons I have yet to find those drivers but i am working on it.
