to maintain a smooth working computer is more than just downloading more software. I always reccomend:
    1. Keep all your personal files n My Docs, using sub folders to better organize your files. This also makes backup easier, just 1 folder to backup.
    2. download as little as possible. you dont need every program that is offered to you. In these free or even pirated programs are "stuff" you really didnt want.
    3. keep your tray clean, this is an indicator of things that are happening in your computer. using msconfig/startup to monitor what is starting up.
    4. Google is your friend, when in doubt or have a question, before asking someone, google it.
    5. use defrag to unfrag files
    6. remove programs you dont use regularly

This is not a guide line for everyone one and is probably not the easiest, but its the easiest I know how to explain to people to use and implement. your mileage WILL vary. GL

    Backup (just in case): Retrospect

AV/anti-malware: AVG suite (firewall, antivirus, anti-spam) on my NB.

And follow ZaZ's and Sykotic's excellent advice.

To paraphrase: Google is your friend most of the time; organization pays off; and there are plenty of legit adult sites that won't crap up your lappy.

AVG worked great for me for a long time, they tend to keep pretty up to date.
