The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    I get a free subscription to PCMag due to some organization my father-in-law belongs to, so I got this issue.

    The one thing that bothered me is that they included some web applets in the list, such as "this site that scans your PC for spyware for free". I don't consider that true software, even if it is useful.

    I thought HotSpotShield would be really cool --until I found that its VPN tunnel ads annoying adds (like the "add free smilies to your e-mail! crap) at the top of one's browser. I'd pay money for a pro version that had no ads, but it's not available, so I got rid of it.

    I think one of the best ways to find cool, free stuff, is just to search Sourceforge.net --you'll find a lot of cool stuff that way.
