Just now I accidentally must have unchecked some things by using msconfig. I restarted and my computer was actually acting sluggish, not to mention the audio service was disabled.

I enabled everything in msconfig this time, but now I want to know what I can uncheck under the Services tab.

I couldnt think of a quicker way to do this right now so I took 11 screenshots of all the services System Configuration shows. Please advise me as to which ones should be disabled, which could be set to manual, and which ones not to touch at all.

I can live without the Windows Media Center and sharing services since I will not use them on a daily basis.

    Thanks in advance.

I sense a disturbance in the internet, as if millions of 56k'ers cried out in horror and were suddenly silenced when their connection died.

Luckily, I've got a high speed connection. Anyway, I've done some research on the topic, but at the moment it seemed that a large amount of it was either contradictory as to what services were necessary and which ones weren't, or it just didn't make sense. And it really wasn't worth my time and effort to go through and try out each one as Vista is running extremely well for me, but I'd still be interested in seeing what others have to say on the matter.

Sorry for the lag...I will surely edit my posts after getting some responses from those on high speed internet connections. Thanks in advance to the ones who will have patience upon me.

Are you running on a server? That's a LOT of startup programs! Is this for business use? Is this machine used for business or are you doing home office connecting to work?

This is my personal notebook but I will use it at work. Not through any servers except VPN at times. These are not the start up programs, but the services. I think it just means all of the ones checked as "Automatic" are running in the background all the time.

Are there any which you see that I could disable or mark as manual?

I never mess around with the services much myself, but I'm pretty sure there are some kind of lists out there that tells you what needs to be enable/disable, like those for startup programs. I'll have a look around.

Instead of msconfig, I'd rather use Services (search for "services" from start menu), at least that gives you more info on what the services actually do and you can decide for yourself.

Edit: first search result from google, you might find this useful.

not sure how reliable these are so use at your own risk!

If you click on a service it will tell you a synopsis of what it's used for and then decide if you actually need it. I went thru it once and choose manual activation instead of automatically starting. Some are programs related and sometimes I don't need activation for example a multimedia program and adobe acrobat until I need it.

    Two things:

    1. Try this link: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

It is a GREAT guide regarding which services are REALLY necessary.

    2. When doing screen shots, if you hold down the Alt Key when you hit the "Prt Sc" key you will get a screen shot of just the ACTIVE window, not the entire desktop. It greatly reduces the size of image especially on wide screen monitors like we both have on our FZ machines!

Thank you all for your responses. I will look into the sites and places you provided.

Gary: I'll make sure to hold down the ALT Key while taking screen shots for help for next time. Not everyone wants to see my beautiful widescreen display! :)

I recommend using the resources of the Blackviper site. Blackviper has several levels of Vista Services recommendations. Just what you're looking for.
