    Wow,

i was having same Vista problem where the C: space left suddenly decreases day by day.

i went to SwSetup folder and found lot of extracted files of big programs no more necessary..

deleted some of them... not all just some useless which were apparent.

    and voila!

i have 2 GB added suddenly.

so all others...try to delete off the Extracted setup files in SwSetup folder located in C drive.

    Cheers!

Posting in windows OS after lot of time.

Isn't the swsetup folder only in HP notebooks?

Hope you burned or copy the directory 'cause that's where HP keeps all the programs and drivers that were installed in your system!

It is HP only. And while I did burn a CD of C:\SWSETUP (which I have never needed or used) before deleting it, the contents can be obtained from the HP website.

That doesn't happen since I limited restore points to a max of 6 gb.

Drivers are available at the HP web site but the programs aren't. I too deleted this directory but 2gb on a 56gb free HD isn't that much. Hmmm what to do with the other 56gb? I'll only delete when it's REALLY needed.

i asked hp about this folder in the past. they said it cannot be deleted because it is the storage location for the drivers themselves. at least those which you download directly from HP.

if you really wanted to get rid of it, you could by reinstalling your OS, then individually downloading all the drivers from the vendors one by one and avoiding HP's driver downloads. but then if there is HP specific hardware on the machine, you'd have to go to HP for those drivers....

It has been gone from my PC for over a year without any adverse effects. Of course, I never download drivers from HP anyway; I get them directly from the vendor of the device being driven.

All I did was cut the folder and paste it on my external...easy as that.

I moved it to a CD that (I think) is in a box somewhere. I have not had the need to look for it.

Be very careful about determining what is "unnecessary". We have been down this path before in other threads, where some one was certain a directory was "unneeded", only to find out further into the discussion that it was needed after all.
