I have a Kobalt Nexus - the 15" Clevo gaming laptop.

I love the thing to bits, but there's one problem. I understand that the computer slows itself down when it's not connected to AC in order to stop the battery from draining instantly, but this change is so significant that I can't even watch YouTube videos full screen without them lagging out completely. The second I plug in the power, the videos return to normal FPS and stop lagging out.

    What could be the problem?

Is there anyway to override this, at least just for when I want to watch movies in bed?

Take a look at your video card settings - there's probably some way to configure the software to not change video settings when on battery. My Dell has an ATI card, and all I have to do is change the PowerPlay settings.

For some reason Kobalt installed the Vista version of the drivers meaning there is no 'mobile' menu, meaning I cannot change the settings using the Nvidia support panel.

Is there any other way to do it?

Okay first try clicking on your battery icon in the lower right corner of the screen in the taskbar you should have 3 options balance, power saver, and high performance. Make sure high performance is highlighted. If that doesn't work then we'll discuss plan B.

You should install NVIDIA drivers. Try laptopvideo2go.

Ok this suggestion goes against plan B.

Laptopvideo2go drivers took away my ability to game high performance on battery power, and infact after uninstalling it and reverting to original manufacturer official nvidia driver. I no longer was able to get high performance.

So hayze99 if plan a didn't work. Plan B is if you do have a laptopvid2go driver installed hopefully you have a system restore point where you can revert back to a time when you had the original stock video driver that came shipped with the Clevo installed. Because if you try and manually install the original drivers, from my experience you're out of luck of getting it back to probably having the factory settings were it actually was able to game on battery and not lose framerates in game.

The laptopvid2go drivers or inf change settings that are crucial to having it. What it changes I don't know? So I don't want to try another unofficial driver less I myself fall victim to the problem you suffer now.

I'm quite resistant to installing any 3rd party drivers, as this computer was very pricy and I love it the way it is, apart from that problem.

I'm using XP, so I don't have a 'performance' option.

Thank you all for your help; are there any other suggestions?

Yes - visit the manufacturer's website and download the XP drivers for your card.

They don't have them. They may be the XP drivers, just customized.

Have you checked the Kobalt Computer forum?

    http://www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=15

Something else you can try: open up the Power Settings, and then click "Change plan settings" on the Power saver (and Balanced) plan. Then, click "Change advanced power settings". Look for anything to do with video. See if you can force a full power setting.
