I am currently on a 15" MacBook Pro from 2010 and am wondering how trackpads in Windows are nowadays.
In most reviews people says they are reasonably precise, big and offer multitouch. When I bought my notebook the reviews of Windows touchpads were rather negative. What I haven't heard or read anywhere is how much control does one have over the gestures.

I am thinking about a Samsung 770 Z5E with the Elan trackpads. The Manual e.g. speaks of right click as bottom right corner. I consider that idiotic. In 3 years owning my Mac I never actually press on the touchpad to click other than for draggin operations. Right click is always just two finger click (anywhere). Getting to a corner is just really inconvenient for such a common thing. Middle click three finger.

Many things more I am used to adjusting with BetterTouchTool.
"Must Have Mac Apps" BetterTouchTool (MacBook/Pro Edition) - Take Control Of Your Trackpad! - YouTube
All that does is allows one to set custom actions for all the gestures the trackpad can discern.

How does that work in Windows? Are you always stuck with the gestures it comes with?
I found the Synaptics Gesture Suite but that looks like all it does is add 6 more boring gestures that should come by default anyway.
How are those drivers and what can one do with them.

I am not really interested in buying another 2000+€ Notebook just because Apple's big notebooks are expensive and I dislike small screens.
In 13" they aren't as overpriced as in the 15" category. But those touchpads do a great deal of work. I virtually never use the mouse. To open a new tab I 3 finger swipe down. to close one I swipe up. That works for windows and tabs everywhere.

The state of trackpads in Windows is rather variable, you have some good one, some that are passable and some that just outright terrible. Synaptics trackpads tend to be better overall, but again, it depends on the driver. The best example of how drivers are important, try a mac trackpad in Windows, you'll see the difference a trackpad can make. Check the reviews as to which notebooks have good or bad trackpads.

The Elans on the Sammies are not bad. You may want to check on the Samsung forum for more details however. My impression is that people seem o.k. with the Samsung trackpads, but most of those who have Macs still seem to feel that those have better trackapds. And of course, you can do two-finger tap as a gesture for right-click. There's two-, three- and four-finger gestures available. No idea how that selection compares to Macs, however.

I know how the MacBook Pro trackpad works in Windows. It becomes virtually useless so that you need a mouse because it supports hardly any gesture and no way to customize anything.
Thanks for the replies but can anybody say what drivers allow for proper customization of gestures. I assume most trackpads now are fairly good but what the driver lets you do aside from factory settings is as I assume a different question.

I got a Logitech G500 which is a pretty neat mouse. It sucks (or sucked) horribly under OSX. Not precise, jerky, just bad. Now a seeming eternity after I bought the mouse they finally released a logitech driver and suddenly the mouse is almost as good as on Windows. The profiles don't work and they get messed up but at least the basics, speed and precision are working now.

I fear the drivers of trackpads in Windows and I simply cannot test them myself. I know that there exists three finger swipes set to do "something". But can I change that something and can I set functions for gestures like three finger swipe up/down which usually isn't occupied?

As is the use of the few words themselves.

    Exactly. For example:

    touch pad
    yea

    touch point
    nea

    track point
    yea

    track pad
    nea

    pad point
    nea; kindly get real!

W/ regard to trackpad, see above. :)

Coming from a Macbook to a Sony Vaio S15 with a synaptics trackpad I have to say that I have been fairly pleased with the Vaio's performance. Two finger scrolling is about as smooth as my MBA's.

Windows devices aren't quite to Apple's level, but in my opinion a lot of the synaptics ones are getting pretty close.

I own mac laptops precisely because of the touchpad/gestures. I'd like to have a win7 laptop in some ways but the ability to scroll through multiple desktops with a 4-finger swipe is amazing for multitasking.

I actually wouldn't know how "modern" trackpads are working, as I have a Compal jhl90, from what? 2006? Yeah, old. But then, I only spent 200 on it soo...
