My windows was hanging on startup because of a virus, so I decided to boot up an OS I had on my USB. The computer didn't support USB booting, so I inserted an Ubuntu Live CD, which comes up fine. However, when I select "Try without changes", everything seems to load up fine until the very end. The screen goes black (as if it was transitioning to the main Ubuntu screen), but just hangs there.

    Any suggestions?

have you tested the Ubuntu LiveCd? When you boot the CD, below the "try out ubuntu without making changes to my system," there's an option to test this cd. This is where I'd start--make sure the CD doesn't have a problem. Only then, would I assume the problem is in your machine.
