Help! I seem to have caught a fiendish bit of naughtyware from them there internet mines. What happens is I get Internet Explorer popups when using Firefox! I've run Ad-aware and Spybot and Spyware Doctor (which picked up more than the others) but I still get the popups...

Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of this blight on my computing day?

    Thanks

Sounds like a good time for a fresh reformatting of your hard drive.

Some pop-ups happen because there is a pop-up program that is installed on the computer. It helps the pop-ups appear, even if you have a pop-up blocker. Pop-ups are the most annoying sort of adware and malware. As chrisyano has already said, it is probably better to just format and install Windows again.

"Fiendish bit of naughtyware." Love it...

Might be easier to determine the problem if you would run HijackThis and post the log here. No need to reformat just yet...

Get it here if you don't already have it:

    http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html

If it's any consolation, you're not alone:

Could do a system restore? That killed a particularly nasty piece of malware I managed to acquire. My documents were intact but installed components etc. was returned to the state it was the day before.

You can go into your windows and system folders and look for fairly recently modified files that have weird names like 0.dll or adkfjioae.exe. Try ewido as well as it gets a lot of that stuff. And you'll need to dump your prefetch folder by turning off system restore. You could be getting rid of it but if it's in your prefetch folder it will only keep coming back.

I'll leave hijack this to someone else. I don't have the patience to look through all of that right now. hehe

It looks like the virtumondo virus, based on the file jkkll.dll having been resident on the nb. There are 2 things you might try. The first is to submit your HJT scan to the following site:

    http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showforum=34

and wait for an answer. These guys are quick, and good, so it shouldn't be too long. Maybe a day at most.

The second is to try removing it by following these directions here:

    http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=196875

    Let us know the results.

Also Justdo flashcatcher might have put malware on your computer. McAfee gives that sight the big red flag.

Good point, but it seems to be up in the air as to whether that will cause a problem, but ya, remove it anyway, at least until you resolve the issue.

I highlighted what I think looks weird. I think I highlight messenger by mistake though.

    Try Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Getright is a download manager and Justdo's Flashcatcher should be OK. The others were Java RE, which he should update, and MS's Messenger.

What you should do is to add NoScript to Firefox for added protection. Almost a required extension...

I don't think spelling accuracy is a requirement for this sight ;) . For that matter, neither is grammer :D , sentence structure, or logic...

In any case, I gave you a rep point to ease the pain :)
