Everyone has there preferences, but i've used spyware, ad-aware, et al. I'd have to say the best and most thourogh (sp?) (after tests too) would be microsoft's Anti-spyware

One program won't be able to catch all the spyware out there, it always advisable to use a combination of 2 or more...

    Top 3 IMO:
    1) MS Antispyware
    2) Lavasoft Ad-aware
    3) Spybot S & D

Right now most independant tests show that Spysweeper is the best in detection, removable, and false alarms. However it's not freeware; it typically runs for $39. It's very easy to use and unlike Spybot it has an active protection that scans programs as their installing (almost like a virus scan). My big gripe about that program though is how intrusive it is when it comes to updating. I'd wish it was done automatically and in the background.

Spybot is still really good, however I wouldn't recomend relying on just that program. it will catch about 85% of the stuff out there, and be able to uninstall 80% of what it detects. if your going to go the freeware route, you might as well go with three solid programs: Spybot, Ad-Aware, and MS Anti-Spyware (which surprisingly gets very good marks).

It seems like everyone knows about the three common programs you need to have -- antivirus, firewall, and anti-spyware -- I personally believe there are three more program groups that need to be added to the 'must have' list: an autostart-background defrag program like Diskeeper, O&O Defrag; a strong uninstaller program like Your Uninstaller 2004; and a registry cleaner/system maintence tool like Registry Mechanic.

    I use 2, just Ad-Aware and S & D.

I would use more but I'm a lazy fool :)

In my opinion, Spybot is better than Ad-Aware. It's great that it's free.

A good combo, if you want to stick to free software, is Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spybot. I only use Microsoft AntiSpyware, but if I were to use two, the second would be either SpySweeper (which we have, I just don't use) or Spybot.

    I use spybot S&D and Lavasoft Ad-aware.

I run S&D first followed by Ad -aware.

    I also run Cache-Cleaner and Registry-Scrub to do intermitent house-cleaning :p
