Ok I wanted to test how effective Spybot SD truly is. I used my Dell 4600 as a test subject. First I reformated the drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2.

Before connecting to the internet for the first time I ran Spybot SD. It came up with no threats (expected).

After that I ran Trend Micro 3.0 anti-spyware -- and again no treats.

So I went online to some sites known to get various spyware (porn + various game sites etc etc). After 30 mins I did a test:

Spybot SD = Found 27 threats

    Trend Micro 3.0 = Found 16

So I disconnected from the internet. Got rid of the threats using Trend Micro ONLY.

I reran Spybot SD and it still said I had 27...weird. I deleted the 27 with Spybot.

I am still disconnected from the internet at this point.

Played a game for 20 mins.

Reran Spybot SD -- and it found 6 new threats.

Ran Trend Micro -- and it found 0 threats.

So I don't know what to make of this...I just hate spyware :D

Common sense would to not even buy a PSP in the first place, and to avoid porn all around, in any way, shape and form possible.

    Very off-topic indeed....

I would assume one of the following cases:

    1) The spyware spread while you played that game. (Very unlikely...)
    2) Anti-Spyware software isn't what it claims to be and needs to be improved. (Most likely...)

    Eh, I would add a 3...

    3) You are a fairly new user who has not yet learned to CHECK what each spyware is. As of currently i have "3 things detected" these 3 things, are that i turned off the firewall, antivirus and... one other alert from windows, BECAUSE ITS ANNOYING, yes, i turned it off, i know i did. And, it considers this a threat, but, if you read, it blatantly is just that, and was then shoved on my ignore list.

Not everything it detects is spyware/adware itself, it can also be suspicous changes from its POV, which just take savying yourself up a little. As for things it cant change, they are numerous thanks to M$'s regulations involving acessing sections of their OS... I've had issues with this in the past. And last, some spyware counters being removed, making safe mode usefull, or is so deep your going to need good ol hijack this. Oh, and last but not least, occationaly Spybot picks up a virus, and unless you read through them, it may not know how to remove it...(and you wont know why... though, spybot removed one virus that avg on my system couldnt touch... so, the reverse can be true too!)

Mturco, your first point is valid and yeah, rare... As for the second, not as true as you make it sound, Now yes, antispyware is yet to have become easy to use, and as of yet no one program is per say "compleate" hence why most people run 2-3 antispyware programs that cover each other creating a decent amount of protection, ftm im running adaware+spybot, my systems been cleaner once... when i had 5... >.> lets just say that 5 is too much work to keep from having issues with them interupting each other, and from slowing down my poor 1.4ghz p-m.

    *waves* have a good day.
