    Hi

Everyone I now right now is talking to me about programs that help your computer "speed up". THe main one is Regestry Mechanic. I am a bit sceptical about this programs as I think that they are viruses or just a waste of money..

Can anyone offer me an insight on these sort of programs. And if so can someone tell me the ones that work.

Speed/Registry optimizers mostly do one or more of the following:

    1. Find parts of the registry that are left behind from uninstalled programs. This is often called 'finding orphans'.

    2. Tweak some default Windows settings to speed up windows.

    3. Compress the registry to make it smaller. I am not really sure what this does. To me compressing something makes it slower because you need to uncompress before you use it. But I dont really know anything about this. I have done it a few times and not noticed a differance.

    4. Some "speed up" programs turn off unneeded windows services.

They might do even more but this is all I can think of right now. I wouldnt pay for any of them. There are free programs that work well.

Well microsoft bootvis made a massive difference - probably about 20 seconds shaved off boot times. I have a registry optimiser - it compressed it only 9% but unless its my mind telling me there was a difference, I am sure yahoo widgets for a start is now smoother and slightly better on startup

    Doesn't hurt to try though

In an earlier similar thread I have recommended Iobit Advanced Windows Care Personal, and it was well received there. It is free and really reliable and good.
It does almost everything what Registry Mechanics does, and more than that.
Also use CCleaner to remove junk files.

Installed bootvis and it took 12 seconds off my boot time! Sweet! Gonna give Advanced Windows Care a try.
