I read somewhere in the Dell forum about some indexing you can disable in Vista and there were claims that it sped up startup times by 35 seconds or so (by more than 1 member). Can anyone tell me how you do this?

Also I thought it would be good if we could get a thread of Vista hints and tips to speed up new notebooks in general since i can't find evidence of such a thread.

The quickest way to do this is to simply disable the Windows Search service. Run Services ( type “Services” in search bar in the start menu), right click on the Windows Search service and select “Properties”. Then choose “Disabled” for the start type. After that, you have to stop this service by right clicking on it and selecting “Stop”.

Whether or not it'll shorten start up times is questionable. A better solution might be to set the Windows Search service to Delayed Start.
