    What is the best free software to recover deleted files?

    I just deleted a bunch of video and want them back.

    I use On Track. Don't think it's free though. Works nice. Try google.

    why arent there any free effective open source options.

    ive been googling for 15 minutes now and all this software seems bad.

    I agree with ratchetnclank, Recuva has been mentioned as a good data recovery application that's free.

    as mentioned above, it worked.

    great software, highly recommended.

    in the span of 20 minutes i downloaded about a dozen recovery programs and only one found the files i wanted yet demanded that i pay to have them saved to my computer.

    this recuva software was easy to install and took very little time to recover my files.

    now i can continue watching the sopranos... :)

    With all due respect, I am glad that you managed to find a free app that accomplished what you wanted, but why should you begrudge the authors of the other apps their desire to be paid for their hard work?

    Most of the SD and CF cards I have came with little CDs of recovery software, too.
